Every time I insert a clean disk for burning into my 1ghz Titanium, the CD that pops up on the desktop has this four letter code (.fpbf)

"untitled CD.fpbf"

Any attempted burning of the CD results in an error and the Powerbook ( 10.4 ) spitting the CD out, leaving a finder folder called "untitled CD.fpbf" on the desktop.

Any help would be most welcome :)

Not sure what it stands for but this is the new way of showing a burnable CD in Tiger. You should be able to copy stuff to it as per usual, but be very pleased that it now puts aliases on the CD instead of pretending to copy everything to the CD before burning - then click burn.... I don't know why it would be giving an error .

I suspect the "bf" part stands for "Burnable Folder".

"Fixed-path burnable folder"?

or something?

It is apparently a normal extension, mentioned here (as well as a few other places):

Burn Folders - another obscure Tiger feature

If you burn CD's or DVD's and haven't used Tiger's new Burn Folder feature, you're missing out. Similar to the new Smart Folders, which have received some attention, the Burn Folders bring a lot of functionality that we haven't had before. To create a new Burn Folder, visit the File menu in the Finder. The newly created folder will have the black-and-yellow burn symbol on the folder icon, and a name extension '.fpbf'. Anything you drag to the folder will be added as an alias. This is the key to this new feature's coolness. By adding an alias, your burn folder is always up to date. It also significantly reduces the amount of time and disc space it takes to prepare files for burning, since there is no need to copy large files. This is great for making backups of project folders in which files change frequently. By using the Burn Folder, you will always have the newest files on your CD or DVD. Thanks Apple! This is a great new feature.

Thanks big mac, But why would a newly inserted CD
be written on in the finder with that extension ?
... and why due to this extension are all of my disks
now non-burnable ?

This is how Tiger handles burns now. When you insert a CD, it effectively just creates a 'Burn Folder' for that CD. That in itself isn't why your burns aren't working.

Everyone gets the .fpbf when inserting a CD in Tiger - however your non-burning issue is unrelated. Out of interest, do CDs burned from iTunes work? (audio CDs) Or data CDs from toast? That could help narrow it down.

It is just my Ti-book that CDs are getting the .fpbf treatment
on my G4Tower running the same OS they are burning fine.

The reason why your disc isn't burning is because of the settings.

If you right click on the icon of the disc and scroll down to get info, the get info box will pop up. in the get info box, you'll see the word "Burning" with an arrow. Open that. It will show you that to burn the disc your Itunes options must be set to **MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J , (NOT ---* M4PToMP3 Virtual CD-RW)

Once you change that settingt the disc will burn fine. It is a new feature of tiger as others have explained.

anyway, I hope that helps you out.
