So the iBook I have running in my shed has been crashing. Last year, it was out in the cold and never crashed. This year, with significantly milder temperatures, it's been crashing about every three weeks or so.
Why is it crashing? Of course, it could be cumulative damage from the temperature conditions finally causing intermittent problems. It also could be the USB thermometer and accompanying software (although that seems unlikely). It could be something else all together.
Here's whats in /var/log/crashreporter.log
Code:
Fri Dec 9 17:46:59 2011 crashdump[167]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Sun Dec 25 18:20:14 2011 crashdump[172]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Mon Jan 16 15:54:10 2012 crashdump[174]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Wed Feb 1 15:21:41 2012 crashdump[167]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Sat Feb 18 14:05:23 2012 crashdump[188]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
Mon Mar 5 10:24:22 2012 crashdump[174]: crashdump invoked as panicdump
I can tell from my sql database that last night's crash happened between 2:00am and 2:01am. There is nothing happening around then in my /var/log/system.log:
Code:
Mar 5 00:49:39 ColdMac kernel[0]: AirPort: New Group Key, Idx 2
Mar 5 01:49:40 ColdMac kernel[0]: AirPort: New Group Key, Idx 1

Mar 5 10:23:58 localhost mDNSResponder-108.6 (Jul 19 2007 11: 33:32)[33]: starting
Here's what's in /Library/logs/panic.log:

"com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily" maybe it is the USB thermometer after all?

Kind of hard to diagnose your situation remotely. Maybe you should disconnect the USB device (thermometer?) and see if the problem stops happening?

HID = Human Interface Device. If not the thermometer, it could be the trackpad or keyboard.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

The problem is that it only crashes every few weeks. So disconnecting the thermometer for weeks, and seeing what happens, would essentially mean taking the project offline all together.
