To elaborate on Athens' answer, The term was in use when I got here and it was new to me and i've never asked anyone, but I told myself it was a combination of "banned" + "terminated."

And that kinda makes sense because in most every case except for maybe one I've seen, NO ONE comes back from being banned. So, that makes it a terminal banning or bannination.

You don't want to get banned. (as if that needed to be said)
Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?

Thanks for the warning. I think, so long as no one is getting banninated for Apple-computer-illiteracy, I'll be okay.

Not necessarily 'terminated'; it's a more or less standard jocular way of altering a verb by adding the common verb ending '-inate' to it. It works fine with other verbs as well.

If you vote in a poll, you say 'votinated'; if you reply to one of james9490's posts, you say 'pwninated'; when reading one of effgee's posts, it is customary to think (if not actually write) 'lolinated'; and so on and so forth.

I always thought "baninated" was a nod to Trogdor's theme song ("Burninating the country side...").

TROGDOR!
TROGDOR!
Trogdor was a man
I mean, he was a dragon man
Er, maybe he was just a dragon
But he was still TROGDOR!
TROGDOR!

Burninating the countryside
Burninating the peasants
Burninating all the peoples
In their thatched roof COTTAGES!
THATCHED ROOF COTTAGES!

Reading James' threads is entertaining and fun, I highly recommend it. However, I at first was under the impression we should ignore him, but others have made it quite clear that he is A Useful Trollâ„¢, an asset. He does not get banninated, because he is genuinely stupid.

There are temporary and permanent bans. People who get out of hand and don't behave civilly generally are temporarily banned. This is generally considered a "cooling off" sort of thing; folks can get pretty emotionally involved with subjects to the point that they lose sight of Rule Number One of Internet Arguments, the definition of which is left as an exercise for the student.

Spammers are banned permanently (and with extreme prejudice). Personally, I'd like to ban spammers in such a way as to make their computers self-destruct, but that's not something we're capable of doing right now. At least not that we'll talk about publicly, anyway.

I didn't know MacNN had a troll. But they've never bothered me, because I don't think they pose a threat. They expend a lot of energy to produce little or no effect. Let them waste their time posting. It's a case of "never stop your enemy from making a mistake".

To open content encyclopedias, like Wikipedia (whose utility depends on a reputation for accuracy) Trolls should pose a greater threat than they do to forums. In a forum, the worst a troll can do is upset the community. But a proliferation of bogus articles would be fatal for an online reference tool. So how can Wikipedia survive when any cretin with a computer can edit, delete or create articles? The explaination given in Time (It's a Wiki, Wiki World, June 6, 2005) explains equally well, mutatis mutandis, why trolls don't pose a threat to message forums:

"Naturally, there are also a lot of idiots, vandals and fanatics, who take advantage of Wikipedia's open system to deface, delete or push one-sided views. Sometimes extreme action has to be taken. [..] But for the most part, the geeks have a huge advantage: they care more. Wikipedia lets you put your favorite articles on a watch list and notifies you if anyone else adds to or changes them. According to an M.I.T. study, an obscenity randomly inserted on Wikipedia is removed in 1.7 min., on average. Vandals might as well be spray-painting walls with disappearing ink."

[Chris Taylor]

Of course there's no watch list on a forum, but the "disappearing ink" analogy applies when idle posts sink off the board into eternal obsolescence. Or you can feed your troll so he sticks around, like the boards' very own gimp.

Nope, not at all. Seriously, most of the time if you're banned, you're gone. If you try to argue or get more information, then you get told to calm down and it's just the internet and it doesn't really matter. Then you say well if it doesn't matter why should I even abide by your stupid rules and then just reregister a new username and do whatever you want.

Hi Cody,

The talk of banning is a subject that makes me very nervous.

Very nice to be among friends here though, especially Cody.

"Baninated" comes from the latin baninatare which means "to remove from the forum".

It was common practice in ancient Rome for mischief-makers to be baninataterunt, or "baninated" from the Roman Forum, and the worst offenders received the dreaded interdit protacimus (IP) baninatare

Who do you think you are, Dr. Turi?

Btw, for the record, he predicted (on national media) Katrina (on the nose) and Rita (on the nose) months before they happened!

I have no connection at all with him but am fascinated by people's 'gifts' that defy our conventional understanding.

End of derail.

I'm surprised at how widely this thread has wandered for starting with such a simple question. And unfortunately I'm not too surprised at the number of "I gotta say my say about this" responses-it's still kind of a good example of good old "Rule Number One of Internet Arguments" though...
