Of course its possible but the experience would be awful. Constant page outs to the HD. I run my 400 Mhz G3 Pismo on 768MB. I feel that for some reason this is the limit of the G3 in OS X. In other words I could put more in but speed would be limited to the G3 chip. Diminishing returns.
Considering you can pick up 512 stick for between 50- 75 dollars it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I would never run any version of OS X on a machine with less than 1GB of RAM. I have an old G3 that I run with 448MB, but it's just a low-load server so it doesn't need too much because it never has any real programs running.
