Hey there!
I've got an iPhone 4 that I use here at home in the USA. I also have an old iPhone 1 (1st generation) that's just sitting in a desk drawer. Being that I'm going to start to travel to Mexico and Latin America frequently... I was wondering:

- Can I re-purpose the iPhone 1 for use in Mexico and Latin America?

I think that it's much better than just calling AT&T and appending international cellular and data to my USA plan. Ideally I'd like to have a Mexican/Latin American pay-as-you-go plan. Does anyone know if this is possible with the iPhone 1? Is it as simple as just getting to Mexico and going to a shop and inserting one of their SIM cards?

Any help with this would be great... especially if there is a Mexican/Latin American carrier that allows Mexico and Latin America cellular and data usage (so I don't have to get a SIM for each country... but I would if they're all pay-as-you-go!). Thanks so much in advance!

Try Taco Bell.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

You'd have to jailbreak the iPhone, and then apply a carrier-free patch.

In theory, it should then work with most GSM networks and carriers.

Great,
I'm going to jailbreak it like so:

Edge iPhones: What to do with my three extras?

But then... can you suggest said "carrier-free patch?" What and where shall I look for the "carrier-free patch?"

Thanks,
BD

Based on my knowledge of the subject, iPhones that have the old bootrom (which includes the original, the 3G and the early 3GS), are permanently jailbreak-able and unlock-able because of flaws in the old bootrom.

Consider buying non-recurrent roaming data for your current iPhone. It may be locked to AT&T, but they'll prolly have roaming agreements for Mexico-bound tourists. Compare the package price with the local 3G offerings, usually bad deals all around from Telmex and Telefonica.
Then use VoIP.

Hey there,
So here is the situation at this point, after I ran "Erase All Content and Settings":
  • Original iPhone 2G running 3.1.3 (7E18) with no cell number tied to it
  • Jailbroken with JailbreakMe 2.0 'star' at JailbreakMe.com
  • Cydia 1.0.3221-72 is now available on the Home screen

What do I now have to do to get a Mexican/Latin American Telcel SIM (or any other Mexican/Latin American carrier SIM) to work in my iPhone 2G? I looked under "Carrier Bundles" in Cydia, but there were no Mexican/Latin American bundles listed.

Any clue? Thanks in advance!
