Ever since installing Lion, my machine will not shut off.
I get a message saying it encountered an error and is restarting.
Only solution is the 'pull the plug' one

Geoff, try resetting the SMC, here's how.
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If doing it once doesn't help try doing it two or three times.

Thank you for your thoughts folks.
The total power off thing has not made a difference
The files for deletion I cannot find. Only one of them is evident on my unit.
The other fly int he ointment is that when I boot up now I do not get the whirling circle, only a black screen until it jumps directly to the log in icon select screen
One final tidbit is that I use a Matrox Triple Head ot Go multi monitor splitter. I have added the new software issued for ML but the drivers are a year old and not compatible
Ahh the joys :-)
Any more thoughts would be most appreciated
Thanks again

Well, pull out the monitor splitter thing and see if things are working correctly. It's always a good idea when troubleshooting to remove all external peripherals to narrow things down.

I had some serious issues when I had an old FW400 drive attached. After it was unplugged, the issues disappeared.

You might try zapping the PRAM. Restart and then promptly hold down the Command+Option+P+R (keys). Wait until you hear 4 startup chimes and then release all keys and allow the computer to boot normally.
(Don't get your hopes up, but it's worth a try.)
Any better?

You only have to wait for 2 chimes. Four is overdoing it.
