Newegg has a 3gb kit of ram for mbp for $189.

It's the CORSAIR 3GB (2GB + 1GB) DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)

Is this too good to be true? Does Corsair RAM stink? I have 2gb right now, but this price seems so good! Any thoughts/words of wisdom?

Corsair RAM does not "stink," but I'm curious how they're putting this package together. Link to the Newegg page please?

Corsair RAM is not bad at all. So no worries there. What I think is that it might be from the lower performing line of their RAM, in which case you would almost be doing your MBP better to get 2GB of the higher rated RAM. Almost.

I'm sure it's good. As for the low price, RAM prices are plummeting right now.

Other World Computing (2.0GB PC-5300 DDR2 667MHz SO-DIMM 200... (OWC5300DDR2S2GB) at OWC) has the 2GB chip for $149 now. RAM prices are continuing to fall, and are expected for continue falling until June before they start to rebound. It's almost silly not to buy at that price.

Edit, price dropped again. If only gas prices were going south like RAM.

If I want to upgrade my c2d to 3gb (its at 2 right now), can I just buy a 2gb chip or should I buy a 3gb kit (2gb + 1gb)? I heard something about how it will be slower if I use two different brands? Is that true?

What do you guys recommend? Thanks!

Just buy the 2GB DIMM. RAM is manufactured to very tight standards. Brand doesn't matter.

or at the $189 price, buy the kit and sell your existing 2GB.

personally, I believe brand matters to a certain degree. Basically, each company has different quality control practices... most large RAM manufacturers sell the stuff that don't pass their most stringent tests to other companies to sell as generic ram.
