... in order to minimise the loss of US-soldiers' lifes. That leads to an interesting development that changes the rules of warfare even more as the development when industrialisation led to the use of machineguns, tanks and planes.
Pilotless drones are already in use by the US and Israel, which fire rockets.
This is the next step, the robotic infantry, which should shoot with machineguns.
The enemy would have to destroy these robots in wartime, but others would come, massproduced in the US, so it would be pretty useless.
So, in order to defeat the US' robotic forces, the enemy would have to resort to attacking on US-soil where the manufacturing plants are.

If control of the robots is computerised, I guess they'll be running Windows. I see no problems here.

"Officials say the robot warrior is fast, accurate and will track and attack the enemy with relatively little risk to the lives of US soldiers." quote from the link above.
excellent!
They can send the embedded reporters from Al-Jazeera out with these.

The enemy has murdered thousands of Iraqis, their own brethren, and will no doubt murder hundreds more before they are defeated by free Iraqis. Do you seriously believe that those insurgents would distinguish between a robot factory and a school on US soil? Hardly. They'd whack any American if they could, robotic factory or not.

Hmm, interesting, nearly noone seems to see that the use of robotic infantry would bring about a new era of warfare with a new arm-race as well as new warfare-rules that would very much change the status of civilians at home.
Even more important is that the use of robotic infantry would mean less human soldiers used and that reduces the opposition at home against starting a war, espescially in an economically strong country that possesses nukes, controls airspace and wants to lead wars against smaller and much weaker countries.
So this development has two and probably more far-leading consequences that should be widely discussed and pondered.
A robotic infantry is in my eyes comparable to the introduction of nukes, rockets or airforce in changing strategies.

All we need are some ED-209s and America will be safe.
Could you imagine 200 - 400 of these things walking in to your town?

If this trend continues, Mattel will have to discontinue the whole GIJOE line.

Sooooo...
All the recruiting attention the military has been giving to the video gaming world is starting to make more sense. The command and control tents for these things will look like a sophisticated lan party for UT2K4.
Creepy.
