I'm probably in the minority, but I hope a new powerbook doesn't come out anytime soon. The longer it goes without a update the more likely I think we'll see intel powerbooks at MWSF. The powerbooks are the most overpriced/underperforming products in Apple's entire lineup, and Im sure that is a major focus for them. I think their saving ALL the goodies for intel so I'm uncertain about another powerbook update. Although I do feel for the people clamoring for "one last" ppc update, the sooner we get intel in my opinion the better. Rosetta run in emulation on a dual-core pentium m would probably outperform todays powerbooks anyhow.

I agree with this completely. I don't know if it's feasible, and depends entirely on Secret Apple Knowledge of how the intel transition is going to go down, but if I got to vote I'd want an intelbook sooner rather than later.

All the specualtion and so called INSIDER web sites are WRONG as usual...
WHEN has APPLE EVER released anything on time? UMMM never.. Me thinks the current Powerbooks are here to stay till the INTEL switch... Why bother releasing a new unit that will be replaced in 4 months?

Personally, not all that interested in Yonah which will be the first Intel chipset employed. BTW, read yesterday that Intel is having "issues" with this chip consuming more power than they wanted. So, it may be a longer wait and not as great as a performer - battery lifewise - than anticipated.

I'm going to sit this transition out until there is software optimized for the Intel chips - at which point we'll all be spending big $ for software upgrades. And I really don't think that Rosetta is going to be the magical fairy dust that some people expect. It is emulation. And better than nothing. My expectations are limited for this stopgap measure.

If new PPC PBs come out I'm seriously considering getting one to last me the 1 1/2 - 2 years until this transition is complete and the Merom is at Rev 2.

For all you early adaptors out there Yonah is going to be very seriously obsolete within 6-9 months after it is released. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=26879

You bring up some valid points in considering the upgrade to MacTel PBooks, which reaffirm my decision to upgrade to the upcoming PPC PBook, which will run all of my current software, at acceptable speeds. I surely wouldn't spend the coin for a 1st gen Yonah PBook, when Meroms are coming 6-9 months later, and should blow Yonahs away.

And, as you also state, the power consumption estimates of Yonah are much higher than current Pentium M's, which will take away much of the battery capacity advantage over current G4 processors.

Apple will have a "silent update" for the PBooks and PMacs soon, almost certainly before the end of October.

About a day or two ago Amazon extended their $200 PB rebate to Oct 18 from its original date of Oct 13. As they say in the movies..."This is no coincidence." I'd look for a silent or perhaps no so silent upgrade - but nothing eathshaking featurewise - shortly after that unless they are delayed again.

The retailers have no idea what's going on with updates... in fact most people inside Apple have no idea about update schedules.

tenj0, when it comes to purchasing a computer especially a laptop since their lifespan is vastly shorter than desktops, one has to access their needs. If you are in a position to wait then by all means wait for an update that you are comfortable with. However, if you can keep putting off a purchase of a Powerbook you may want to consider do you need one at all just joshing with you….

Also keep in mind what it is exactly that you will be using your Powerbook for because too many times people purchase these so called high power computers and come nowhere near to using their computer to its full capacity. I know a few Powerbook users and it almost like their Powerbooks are glorified paperweights or something. So just make sure that whatever computer you decide to purchase that you are getting your dollars worth. When one is using their computer they tend to spend less time on specs and more time on actually using the computer… for every person stating the current line of Powerbooks lack this and can not do that etc etc there is a person like me who this past spring alone edited four short films using Final Cut Pro three of which were good enough to win a few film festivals and recorded two albums all on my 15-inch 1.25ghz PB… and that is not including the many slide shows, animated sequences, visual fx etc etc that I have done on my machine… and I have come across numerous animators, filmmakers, editors, music producers, visual fx specialist etc etc who getting jobs completed on Pismo and Ti Powerbooks… Be careful of specs they are more practical and marketing ploys than they are applicable….

Kenstee and iBorg thanks for bringing some very sound reasoning and information on the soon to be we think intelPb. I definitely know one thing for sure until the MacIntels will be able to run Final Cut Pro and Logic and I am not jumping on board…

Don't be so sure. These people move a lot of product for Apple. Are you familiar with the concept of inventory control?

I can say from experience - No retailers have any idea of what Apple is going to do. They find out about new products the same time you do.

So the initials EOL on inventory control sheets are meaningless? C'mon!
