I get the feeling that there may well be some sort of uber update for Tiger. although then again we all know how lazy OmniGroup are...

Worry not.... I am sure OW will be just fine. If they just quickly copied all of the new features in Safari (RSS browsing, searching etc) and added on some smart folder technology, that would be great.

OW5.1 works like a charm for me.

It needs work, and the economics of it do not look good. It's hard to compete with what is free.

I don't agree.

OW5 will STILL have features that no other browser has and still works better (if not faster) than any other browser out there.

Safari RSS take a good leap forward, but you still get what you pay for and as far as I am concerned Safari RSS is NOT free, it is part of a package of software you get for $129. Maybe it is $10 or $15 but it is not free.

what's with the doom and gloom?

Omniweb has pretty much always been competing with free options. It survived IE, Safari, Camino, and Firefox introductions. At least a while ago, it was still Omnigroup's #1 product, and is still, far and away, my favorite browser.

Tiger has "over 150 new features" so Safari 2.0 is about 85 cents.

It does indeed use the new WebCore. I find OW 5.1 faster under 10.3.9.

On a different note, I think the next major revision to OW could use Spotlight to make smart folders for bookmarks. That would be handy, I think.

ah didnt think it would, as usually we have to wait. im assuming we will have to wait for tiger and then we can get a new fancy version with a faster webcore and nicee tiger additions.

That's probably thanks to the system optimization. My feeling is that OW is more susceptible to fragmentation - after system optimization following OS update or security update, OW gets faster.

It's amazing how much the popularity of OmniWeb has fallen over the years. About 4-5 years ago, an OmniWeb thread would be the most popular thread here. Today, they released a major update and there has only been one post.

I think that's partially due to them opening their own forums. Personally, I'm just as big a fan (if not bigger) as I always have been.

More likely it is because the competition at the time consisted of Internet Explorer (utter crap) , iCab (still felt like an OS9 app) and Mozilla (utter crap at the time), and that was it. Then Chimera/Camino came out followed by Firefox and Safari as well as others such as Shiira. In other words, OmniWeb is not the only decent MacOS X browser out there any more.
