anyone using firmware password on their macbook/macbook pro?

i just enabled it on my aluminum macbook. works fine (i hold 'option' on boot, put in my password, boot from the internal drive).

just wondering if it's worth it, or? am traveling a bit with my mac, and wanted better security than using the basic password login window...

thoughts? anything?

IMO, it's not worth it, since it can be easily circumvented.

If I had sensitive data on my MacBook, I'd use tools like Espionage or TruCrypt to secure it.

is it that easy to circumvent? espionage, for example, is folder-specific; just trying to find a way to prevent easy access to ALL my files...

You can use Espionage to encrypt your complete Documents folder.

And yes, circumventing the firmware password is that easy. Takes about 5 min, instructions are everywhere on the web.

one thing about firmware password; when i boot, i get the blinking folder icon. if someone DOESN'T know about booting holding the option key...they won't even SEE the password window. or, if they don't KNOW about firmware protection...

anyway, works. will keep it active for a while, see how that goes...
