A silent security update was pushed out by Apple on Friday, that has prevented the on-board Ethernet plug from working on some Mac models. The update didn't remove the driver for the BCM5701 Broadcom chipset from the system, but "blacklisted" it, preventing it from loading. The problematic update has been pulled, and replaced with one that restores the functionality of the driver -- but it must be loaded by the computer connected to the Internet (presumably over Wi-Fi) for the fix to be applied. Late-model MacBook Pros, as well as some iMacs, are affected by the security update problem.
