This is an example of how forward thinking Apple is...they are already prepared for Macs with more than an exabyte of RAM!

The file /System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/English.lproj/AppleSystemInfo.strings contains instructions for formatting the machine configuration strings that are displayed in by "About This Mac..."

Here is some of the text:

//=========================================
// String used to format RAM description, when there is more than 1 GB of RAM.
//
// IMPORTANT: Make sure the right hand side value contains the substring "%.*f".
// "%.*f" will get replaced by the actual RAM in units of GB (e.g. "1.2").
//-------------------------------------------------------
"RAMInGB" = "%.*f GB";

//=========================================
// String used to format RAM description, when there is more than 1 TB of RAM.
//
// IMPORTANT: Make sure the right hand side value contains the substring "%.*f".
// "%.*f" will get replaced by the actual RAM in units of TB (e.g. "1.2").
//-------------------------------------------------------
"RAMInTB" = "%.*f TB";

//=========================================
// String used to format RAM description, when there is more than 1 PB of RAM.
//
// IMPORTANT: Make sure the right hand side value contains the substring "%.*f".
// "%.*f" will get replaced by the actual RAM in units of PB (e.g. "1.2").
//---------------------------------------------------------
"RAMInPB" = "%.*f PB";

//==========================================
// String used to format RAM description, when there is more than 1 EB of RAM.
//
// IMPORTANT: Make sure the right hand side value contains the substring "%.*f".
// "%.*f" will get replaced by the actual RAM in units of EB (e.g. "1.2").
//----------------------------------------------------------
"RAMInEB" = "%.*f EB";

They've got Terabytes, Petabytes, and Exabytes?? What are they thinking?

Even a Terabyte is at LEAST a decade away.

I don't know about that. The maximum RAM in a Mac Pro is now 16 GB — that's 10 times more than the capacity of a 2002 Power Mac — and people are already clamoring for more. I wouldn't be surprised to see setups with terabyte capacity within five years.

In the mid '80s, 1 megabyte was typical. In the mid '00s, 1GB was typical. I'd say we'll have a terabyte of RAM in the mid 2020s.

Still, I simply thought this was interesting.

There are some Sun servers that can handle 2TB of RAM, so I don't think PB or ZB would be that far away in the future...
