Big Blue's tiny box is a big seller - 'Blade' servers make a hit
"As for IBM's Microelectronics Division, whose biggest customer remains IBM's own computer makers, a new source of business is on the rise. This fall, Shearer said, a blade server based on an IBM chip will be announced. This will be a two-processor blade using a chip being developed as part of the PowerPC line. Some of the development work on the PowerPC occurs at East Fishkill."
I wonder if G5 Xserves are also to be released this fall. And will they be 1U when they're released? I expect so.

This could be a good sine; it seems to me that blade servers should be harder to cool than desktops. Could this mean that IBM is getting lower power / heat G5s out, which may mean that there is at least some progress on a G5 laptop (not that I expect one any time soon)?. Anyway, I tend to think that a G5 xserve will come soon; apple just can't go on haveing their desktops so much faster than their servers.

I just think they're the same chips. If you can have dual Xeons and dual Opterons in a 1U blade, then having dual G5s should not be a humungous problem.

I'm not an expert when it comes to 1U racks, but don't they tend to be a bit noisy with loud, strong fans? That could be the tradeoff.

Yes. But it's a rack server after all.

And you thought your rev. 1 MDD G4 was noisy. G4 Xserves are very loud.

Well, rackmounts are usually stored in places where no human should be sitting in ALL day -- maybe in a separate room, but not the same room.

Sucks to be you! Server rooms are loud, but that's why they are called server rooms. Also, it should be kinda cold or at least cool. Bummer if you had to sit there all day.

Actually no. Blade servers are easier to cool - it's called air conditioning (as well as a few fans). As one person hinted to, blade servers are put in server rooms which are cooled by air conditioning to a room temperature cooler than normal room temp - probably around 10 or 15 degrees Celsius (at least it feels like that).
