I've got a number of Macs in the house that I have been backing up via Time Machine to an internal hard drive on a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8. Everything works fine - the remote clients are backing up to the Mini with no problems. Except I eventually filled the 500 gig drive. I thought that Time Machine was supposed to delete the earliest backup when the drive limit was reached? In any event, that's not happening.

I thought I'd go out and get a 4TB external drive and connect it to the Mini and have that drive serve as the Time Machine backup location. I can backup both of the internal drives on the Mini server (named, appropriately enough, "mini"...). No problems. But I cannot seem to figure out how to backup the remote machines to the external drive on the Mini. I can continue to backup the remote clients to the internal drive with no problem - and figure that may be a temporary solution - Time Machine backs up the clients to the internal drive and then Time Machine on the Mini backs up its internal hard drives to the external drive. That works. But what I'd like to do is backup the remote clients to the external Time Machine drive.

I've got a few pictures...

This picture is a screen shot of Remote Desktop logged into the mini server. The left side of the screen shows the image from RD and I am remotely logged into the min server. I've created a new share for the external drive and named it "Time Machine Backups - 4TB". Again, no problem backup those two internal drives to the external drive. The Time Machine preferences on the left side is from the server running in the RD window. the Time Machine preferences on the right side is from my MBP (which is running the RD console). As you can see, both Time Machine destinations ("Backup" and "Time Machine Backups - 4TB" are displayed here.

When I select the "Time Machine Backups - 4TB", this is the response I receive:

The error is "The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 5.)" I found some discussion on the net about this error, yet haven't been able to figure out how to properly configure the share on the mini to be used for Time Machine from remote clients.

When configuring the sharepoint for the external drive I have enabled it as a Time Machine destination.

So... I'm missing something simple, I think. But it's well beyond me to figure out what I've missed. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
