- Today Mail just stopped receiving mails (duh!). Sending mail works. Same settings in other programs work. Stable 10.3.9, I have only 2000 Mails stored alltogether, nearly no large attachments... WTF???

other fun facts:
- opening mails with embedded images (etc) from Windows Outlook 2003 users -> Mail crashes
- opening mails with .p7m / OPAK signature -> Mail often crashes
- OPAK signatures are not recognized/verified
- ...

Disgusting crappy program. I'd just like to WORK! I only started using Mail some weeks ago since my 5 year old Outlook Express developed some quirks (with 10.000 Mails, can't use signatures...). I guess I'll just switch to the latest MS Entourage...? I don't think it could be worse than Apple Mail. Hm...

I have thousands of emails in Mail (currently over 7,000 in the combined inbox), in nine accounts, many with large attachments and have yet to have a single issue. This is on the most recent (Tiger) Mail, however I don't think your issues are inherently a problem with Mail in general.

Well over 10,000 messages here, containing an email history dating back almost 10 years (Eudora to Netscape to Outlook Express, to Mail).

Do you have any haxies or SIMBL plug-ins installed?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Why would you want to even try to keep 10,000 + emails
- or even 1000 for that matter - i am very curious about
this.

No problems here either, I've been using mail.app for years w/o any issues. Looks like it may not be mail.app's issue but something on your mac is causing the conflict.

Mail takes up very little space for the amount of information it holds.

Every month I get notifications of payments to my credit cards in my email, I get letters from friends, receipts from things I have purchased, and many other important things. Spotlight makes it very easy to find any of these things in seconds. Currently I have 1651 non-junk email and I can't tell you how many times it has come in handy to find a 6 month old email for something I might have registered.

At work my exchange server only holds 11 mb of email. I recieve upwards of 75-100 emails a day there, addressed to me. In this situation I would love to be able to store 10,000 emails instead of always having to delete or archive messages I like because of a limit on my mailbox size. If I used my Mac for business I'm quite certain my mailbox would be upwards of 10-20,000 items as well.

Okay, since none of you shares those problems, that's very strange...
What can I do? Trashing some files etc?
I should return to a working eMail client ASAP...

You didn't answer my question - do you have any haxies or SIMBL plug-ins installed?

Could you post the crash log for Mail.app which should be in your home folder -> Library -> Logs -> CrashReporter?

Also, if you could launch the Console application which is in the Utilities folder and then make Mail crash, you could see if anything shows up in the Console that could be helpful.

i'm not sure how the mail.apple.com.plist file will effect your problem by trying to remove it from the preferences folder, but I'd give that a shot. It may require you to redo your mail accounts but I don't think it will delete your emails. Worst case just put it back in the preferences folder and replace the new one it creates.

Nope, no haxies, no plug-ins.
Here is the log from the latest crash (I had to delete some Threads):

That error message looks like an unhandled exception (i.e. a programming error). I would strongly suggest that you submit a bug at http://bugreporter.apple.com and include the raw source for the message which causes this crash as an attachment.

Apple can't fix bugs they don't know about.

Maybe because I value the information contained in there? Seriously, I have all the early messages sent between my wife and I when we first met, I have messages from my dad who died three years ago, I have messages from friends who live all around the world, and thanks to Spotlight and Mail's awesome interface for grouping messages and marking replies, I can relive and re-experience important moments and conversations. My email is as valuable to me as my photos are, and take up much less space.

Looks like you have mail.app in a folder called "Internet Programme" - try moving it back to the Applications folder and see if that helps. Apple don't like us messing with their file system no more...

Some days ago, at least the mail download started working again. "All" I had to do was to manually click on the account/get new emails/account xyz for every one of my accounts. I will still ditch it. THe other quirks remain, and it's sort of blocking part of the company workflow (e.g. sending invitatations/tasks) ...

True, that's why I report ~95% of all crash reports. Of those nasty Mail crashes, I must have reported about 20 to Apple. Problem I could see: It's of course a german system/reporter field, so I don't know, how unfiltered this (foreign) reports get to the (U.S.) Developers.

I did that from the very beginning, never noticed a problem that could be related to that. See also my problem "solution" I posted above.

Just over 2000 messages spanning several years. Migrated across several computers. No problems.

I'm running Panther on a G4... have had similar problems for the last couple of weeks after more then 2 years of smooth sailing.

Mail app picks up some messages from the server... sometimes it marks messages as picked up, but when it leaves them un-marked it simply downloads them time after time. Ofen Mail app picks up messages, plays it's "new message" sound... but the messages are nowhere to be seen.

My only dependable workaround is using Webmail... but that leaves no record on my own computer..
