Closing the lid... WHAT exactly puts the machine to sleep?

I'm asking because - while upgrading an iBook G4 - we accidentally removed that larger magnet that is glued under the left side of the upper case (would "meet" the left frame of the display then, when closed). It _seems_ now the machine won't sleep automatically when closing the lid.
Anybody can confirm or deny that?
Regards
PB.

That is correct. (On my MacBook, I sometimes use the magnet on the frame to hold my Apple remote!)

The magnet activates a reed switch in the lower case. You must have the magnet in place to sleep the machine when the lid is closed.

The reed relay would then be left side in the display frame, right? Since the magnet itself is already in the case...

Upper case is the display, iSight camera, backlight, etc. Lower case is the keyboard, main logic board, hard drive, etc. In some machines the magnet is in the upper case and the switch in the lower case. In other machines, it's the opposite. Wherever the magnet is, it has to meet the switch when the lid is closed.
