Rental income is a good thing.
Woodworking for me is a hobby (albeit a serious one) and I don't really ever want to do it as a sole income. I simply don't like making what other people want. I did that with oil painting for a while and couldn't stand it. Right now I make a piece for furniture and if someone wants it and I don't need it they can have it. Only about 5% of my woodworking is commission stuff

I would never get into the world of landlord. It seems too sleazy for me. People should own where they live, not rent.

Lump sum check and severe all future employment with GM. All benefits stop other than what I have vested in my retirement account. When I reach retirement age I will collect a tiny pension from GM.

Lump sum. I have already talked to a CPA and it looks like I will be liable for a tax sum around $38,000

I don't like to quote multiple people in the same post.

Not everybody can afford to buy their own home. And you could be the exception to the rule, being a non sleazy landlord who cares about his tenants.
Owning real estate is a good way to get a decent return on your money.

I intent to accumulate as many rental properties as I possibly can during my working life, rather than trust a pension fund (now there's sleazy for you).

Understood. But like your earlier point, pensions aren't sleazy just like being a landlord isn't sleazy... just people who manage pensions badly are sleazy.

I'm beginning to think it was no sabbatical at all but a lay-off. I told him he wouldn't have a job to go back to. And now he doesn't, so I was right.

He was a prick to me so I'm happy!

not being hateful...

The definition of art has changed in the 20th century... see modern art, pop art, etc.... it's not exactly like a classic wooden chair

but that doesn't mean what he does isn't beautiful..
who in today chooses what's art and what's not?

museums
critics
artists
governments
historians
people who invest/make money with art
etc (many actors not listed)

art is a trend today.

Actually, I've had art theory/history courses.

I'm sure you could have them too if you go back to school (which I encourage you to do!)

Nope, you're wrong. The sabbatical very likely had nothing to do with the buy-out, and he'd be in the same position whether or not he was on leave. That's just the way these things work.

The buy-out thing is big news here in the U.S., because it involves GM, and whatever happens to GM is still news. From what I've read, it's pretty wide-ranging in the company. Lots of people are getting this.

Yeah I know, I'm only giving you the academic definition.

g'luck it can be tough out there. Just be happy that you got a fat paycheck to send you off.

Anyway, like Mastrap suggested, you can never go wrong with buying and renting property. As long as you pick a decent property in a decent area, you can't go wrong.

Art is something different to everyone. Now, a nice chair on the other hand is useful to most people. I would take a nice chair over some useless painting any day.

Why not set up some auctions on ebay and see how a few pieces sell?

A chair is a piece of art.

Some of them are ugly and have near zero value, but some are beautiful and elegant and sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Well, before that, Academies (which were set by the governments) would set pre-defined standards that would define what art was. Usually: a sculpture, a painting that would illustrate "higher values" (heroism, etc.) or God, etc.

Anyway, you can also open a book about art history. I would be able to explain it to you in French, but not in English. So refer to a book.

Gombrich is a good historian of art.

ok, i see what you mean.

i did the art history classes, but unfortunately they were mostly exercises in memorization. i had a very good professor who taught art criticism however.

You made racist comments about Mexicans. I am very satisfied with my heritage and thankful and happy about my ancestors.

You however are VERY insecure and immature. A secure and mature individual would own up to their actions and statements. You, do not.
