http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thedeparted/

And it sure is star studded!

Martin Sheen .... Oliver Queenan

Vera Farmiga .... Madeleine

Mark Wahlberg .... Dignam

Anthony Anderson .... Brown

Ray Winstone .... Mr. French

Alec Baldwin .... Ellerby

Years ago, a powerful Irish mafia figure placed a small selection of his youngest, brightest men into the Massachusetts Police Academy as cadets. Their purpose is to eventually rise within the prestigious ranks of the city's police department, to serve as the eyes and ears of their boss.

While somewhere else, a young cadet was assigned with an equally dangerous task: infiltrate the Irish syndicate headed by the man sending in his own to the Boston Police. Now, one cadet is an up and coming police official with a torn allegiance to his job and to the criminal mastermind that put him there.

While the other cadet is the trusted number two of that man, only finding his professional duties are becoming blurred with his current state. But new clues have lead to unfortunate discoveries, when both sides realize they're being watched by the enemy. It's now all just a matter of time before the men assigned to find out whose the infiltrator, could come to a bloody end when someone's identity may be revealed.

Summary written by mystic80

A remake of a Hong Kong film called "Wu jian dao" (aka Infernal Affairs), two men from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Boston State Police department and the Irish mafia, but violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.

I saw the original a couple of months back. It was O.K. as far as an action flick is concerned, but it didn't live up to the hype that surrounded it. Hopefully Scorsese does a better job with the storyline.

Looks like Goodfellas 3. (Casino being Goodfellas 2). He even goes so far as to rip off his own use of the Rolling Stones from that film. And I never buy Matt Damon, even when he's playing Matt Damon.

However, as a fun, cool-looking flick, it could be fit the bill.

It just makes me weep a little for the days of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver or After Hours.

Well, Scorsese knows how to make a movie, there's no doubt!

And in the list of actors above there are 7 guys who have been the top headliner in past films.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Titanic, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator

Matt Damon - The Bourne Identity, Oceans Eleven, The Talented Mr. Ripley

Jack Nicholson - The Shining, As Good As It Gets, A Few Good Men

Martin Sheen - Apocalypse Now, The West Wing (TV)

Mark Wahlberg - The Italian Job, Boogie Nights

Anthony Anderson - Hustle and Flow, Kangaroo Jack

Alec Baldwin - The Hunt for Red October, Beetlejuice

Talk about star power!

I don't know. Nicholson is impressive in the trailer but whenever Damon and Di Caprio open their mouths I can't stop thinking why are college fratboys playing hard boiled state cops and Feds. Was the Hong Kong version like that?

OWG, maybe that's a sign of increasing maturity when college frat boy types seem too young to be rookie cops.

It sounds like Scorcese found a new actor to replace Di Niro.

I just love Scorcese to bits; he is such a great director and it is a shame he will never win the oscar for best director but you never know Polanski won one.

well duh everything is a remake, thats not really changing.

But this does look pretty good. One of my teachers was Scorsese's right hand man for like 10 years. He worked on everything.

Yup! Monique, your perspective and point of view is very refreshing. I hadn't thought about his relationship with DeNiro in that way until you mentioned it. Then once I thought about it I realized you nailed it!

Leonardo DiCaprio is the new DeNiro!

I don't know about that. At least DeNiro "had" a wider range as far as acting is concerned. Just look at his roles in Scorsese's movies- he's played gangsters, a boxer, a nutso comedian, a musician, and a crazy Vietnam vet. I found all his roles to be believable, unlike DiCaprio, who I'll always see as a little kid who's trying a bit too hard to grow up. Maybe in a couple years my perception of him will change.

Maybe I should have qualified my statement to emphasize it's the Director/Star relationship which is being replicated. Where the star was once DeNiro, it's now DiCaprio.

Yes, there is a difference in their abilities and all.

And yes, I too saw him as a little kid trying too hard. But I finally 'accepted' him after seeing, "Catch Me If You Can."

I really enjoyed that film and that role and when he had all those babes on his arm at the airport, I was sold!

I'm all for all of the actors except for the last name on the list. I've never been a fan of his. The Hunt for Red October was good, but that's about all I can say. I don't mind DiCaprio and Damon playing more mature parts. They're getting older, so it's time to spread their wings (which one could say they've already done). Nicholson is awesome in ANYTHING.

Yeah, you're right about the Director/Actor relationship- I'm pretty sure they're both going to be making movies together for years to come. I just wish it was someone else rather than DiCaprio that was the "star" in Scorsese's movies.

All credit should go to the insightful, Monique!

I just agreed with her statement.

I really like the original one because it's soooooooooooo original...although I'm looking forward to see how this remake will be beautifully and truly presented by Mr. Scorsese.

As a Hong Konger, the first impression I got from the trailer is the genuine difference between Eastern and Western cultures which make the backdrops already look quite different - the places where the mob made the illegal deals, where the undercover "informed" his "real boss" of the police force, etc. The first impression, or we Chinese call it "original taste", is already lost in the remaking process, no matter how closely it follows the original scripts - e.g. the fall of Jack from the building, the MOSS code used for secret communication between the undercover and the police force...

Hard to say if it can win any Academy awards at this stage....

Couldn't find a newer thread - I saw the film tonight and liked it a lot. Good dynamic range from DiCaprio, really strong performance from Nicholson and I liked Vera Farmiga a whole bunch. I was surprised to see from the credits that it was a remake (as marcotopia describes above).

I saw it and liked it too. It was a bit convoluted, but good. The last few minutes kind of threw me off, but I liked it.

Saw it on my trip to NYC. Despite the shitty seats, the movie was awesome. I really liked it. One of those flicks that's engaging from beginning to end the whole way through. Not quite Goodfellas status for me, but getting close, IMO.

It is an excellent movie but I had one problem with it.

I kept getting Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon confused. Why?...either a brain fart or they were both scruffy most of the time I had to look twice.

Just sayin'.

Yeah, Infernal Affairs is supposed to be very good. I'm going to watch it before I watch The Departed.

The storyline and plot were excellent, but meh. I didn't really like it. Nicholson kicked ass, DiCaprio was ok... but Damon was just annoying as hell. And the ending sucked IMO.

I did too! I thought I was just weird. For the first few mins, I had them mixed up.
