I have searched the forums but have not been able to find an answer. I'm sorry for another post dealing with installing Panther, but I'm confused.

After installing Panther (clean install) on my Cube, when I tried to open Classic, I kept receiving an error message that it had either not been installed or couldn't be found, or something like that.

My questions are these: does Classic get installed with the Panther installation? If so, how do you get it to "work"?

If not, how do you get Classic (or OS 9) installed? Should I have done a clean install of OS 9 and then chosen the upgrade option to install Panther?

Obviously, I am still a little confused with exactly how Classic works, but I need it because I have several applications that run only in Classic.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

You should be able to install OS 9 on the same disk, just do not do a clean install. Then boot back up into Panther, select the OS 9 system folder in System Preferences, and then it should work.

Classic is not installed with Panther, but it's not removed either, so unless you deleted it before the installation you should still have it.

If you have deleted this might help:

you say you did a "clean" install - not a re-format install....so your old os9 system should still be there. try going into your system preferences->classic and seeing if it finds your os9 system and select/launch it from there. if you *did* reformat install, you will need to install os9 again (as said in the above reply).

****For starters Panther does not include classic with their install. Secondly, if you did a "clean install" as i did you removed classic during that time, so if you want classic again you are going to have to reinstall classics. The only reason i have posted this reply is because with me i did not want classics on my computer, so that's why i got rid of it by doing a clean install, but before doing that i took the files and settings i wanted and used a firewire and put them onto another computer for safe keeping until Panther was installed. I hope this was helpful to you.

Maybe I'm confused on the terminology. I reformatted my HD and installed Panther (I thought that was considered a "clean" install.) When I could not get the Classic environment to open, I was stuck, unsure of what to do.

If I am understanding everyone correctly, can I simply re-boot my computer using the OS 9 disk and install OS 9 on top of Panther?

Yes, restart on the Mac OS 9 CD, install it (remember, you'll have to do a "Clean Install" of OS 9...this doesn't affect anything, it's just otherwise it'll try to upgrade Panther to 9, obviously not possible), and then go back to Panther. It should work then.
