Hello,

I'm doing a repair on a friend's mp3 player that uses a laptop HD. The drive was dead, but i ended up banging it a few more times, and I got it to work in the MP3 player. However, when I take the drive out and put it in an enclosure and try to mount it in OSX, I get " The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"- I'm able to see the disk in Disk Utility, and it gives me the option to reformat.

I also tried hooking it up to my Windows computer, and it's more or less the same thing. Windows "sees" the drive, but won't mount it.

So I know the data on the drive is fine. What I want to do is just extract the data and move it to a new drive. Is this at all possible to do on my own?

Again, the drive works perfectly in the MP3 player (Creative Nomad Zen Xtra)

Thanks!

Extract the data from the drive when it's in the MP3 player. The drive is failing/failed, it's not going to last much longer.

That's the other thing I forgot to mention. Windows won't recognize the MP3 Player either...

It sounds like the drive is formatted in some special system that neither OS X nor Windows can use. If Windows won't recognize the player, reinstall the player's interface software on the computer and try again. As long as the player is seeing the drive, that's the best way to get at the data.
