In the wake of Microsoft reversing course, and adding document creation and editing to all iOS users of its Office suite for iPad at no charge, the company is offering refunds for Office 365 subscribers who request it. The offer is limited, with significant restrictions: it requires proof of purchase, is likely not available to those who purchased through the app, and is pro-rated.
The offer extends to Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal subscriptions made between the iPad version of Office's release date, and November 6. Business licenses are unaffected, and will not be refunded. Access to extended OneDrive storage granted by the subscription will be curtailed immediately upon refund request, so users are advised to move data stored there to other backup devices before cancellation.
Refunds will take six to eight weeks to arrive, and the company reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to not honor requests that it deems fraudulent. The refund extends from the date of submission to the date of subscription completion.

Originally, Microsoft was going to give everyone a Surface but they realized that no one would help take them off their hands.

Hmm, I wonder if they could do that with the RT tablets...

The article is not correct. I contacted Microsoft and the offer is only valid if the subscription was purchased using the iOS app. The article says it is "likely NOT available to those who purchase through the app."

The Microsoft rep also told me it is available only if you have it installed on the iPad and nothing else. Since I used my subscription to also install Office on a Windows PC, I am not eligible for a refund.

Nope- check it again. The page itself says that purchases made through Microsoft's web page are the only ones that they can refund, and customers would have to go through Apple customer service to get in-app purchases refunded.
Don't forget, Apple takes 30 percent of in-app purchases, including for Office subs.
