I've got an old 7100/80AV with a bunch of RAM and an ethernet card that I want to use as a little file server for pics for my web page and message board. I looked at Anonymous and thought that could work. Is there any other freeware/cheap shareware out there that would work? And once I get that software, how would I set up the computer, make an uploader page, etc?
One more thing: I should be hooking this computer up to an always-on DSL connection via the ethernet port on the DSL modem. The USB port on that modem is used for the PC it's supposed to go with. We've had a PS2 and PC running at the same time, so theoretically it should work. So what do I need to do as far as set-up, IP addresses, and then making some sort of uploader?

And the computer is currently running 8.0, but I could upgrade it up to 9.1 or anywhere in between if that helps.

Assuming you want to stick with Mac OS, your options are limited. You could always install LinuxPPC and use apache.

Assuming though you want to use OS8 or OS9, Quid Pro Quo is a good, free choice:

Thanks for all that, I got them both and looked at them.

Now does anyone know how this will work all together? I'm guessing that it's a dynamic server, so if the computer has a new IP address every time it starts up, that might make it hard to keep track of it. Any suggestions on how to always know how to find the computer? And this computer won't even be at my house, so remotely accessing it would be great. I have Jaguar and it's got 8.0. Could I use file sharing to be able to copy stuff right to the hard drive?

But will it update its redirecting even if the IP changes a lot?

That's the whole point of dyndns. You run a client on the Mac that tells dyndns when your IP changes.

OK, assuming I get this running, is there any freeware pop3 mail server I could use?

You can probably find an old copy of Apple Internet Mail Server (AIMS). It was pretty decent in its day and was free.

any ideas where? I checked apple's support page, versiontracker, and some personal pages, but it's either not there or the links are dead.

By the way, I went ahead and upgraded to 8.1 and carbonlib 1.0.4

ok- I have the server up and running now. I'm using Quid Pro Quo to serve the website, which is working fine: right here
I'm using no-ip.com and their dynamic dns update software, and that is all dandy. My problem now is FTP. I can't find a good read me for qpq, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. When trying to connect to the server from another computer with an ftp client, the client sits there saying trying to connect to socket, until it times out. the server then lets me know that someone was connected. But i can't actually connect and upload files. Any ideas?

QPQ is a web server, and as far as I know has no FTP server.

If you need an ftp server, NetPresentz was the one I used long ago on OS7/8 back in the day.

I think you're right. I guess i thought i read something about ftp, but maybe that was in the full version.
So i've seen netpresentz before, and i think it costs like $10, which isn't bad.
So it would work to have qpq and netpresentz running at the same time, right?

And how can I connect to the server from my computer over the internet? What do I need to do within file sharing to set that up? Do I need to know the current IP address or can I use my dynamically changing dns address?

I've never used it, but CrushFTP apparently works on pre-OSX systems:

http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/1083

It's $25.

crushftp is a java app, i wouldnt want to run java on a 7100/80, it will be way too slow i think, and use a LOT of memory

i once used a 6100/60 as router/webserver/ftpserver, i used linux on it (http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net) it worked great.
linux uses way less resources compared to MacOS, and also use the resources available in a better way, it will bring out the best performance in that old machine.
and it doesnt have to waste memory and cpu cycles running a GUI, you can remove the monitor from it, and configure it from the command line over SSH, from your OSX box.

but if you dont want to install linux, i dont know which ftp server to use, Rumpus and Webstar would probably be the best, but they are expensive, funny there are no good freeware FTP servers for OS9, however i found another ftp server that wasnt listed on Versiontracker, but its also written in Java like crushftp, but at least its freeware, the site says it will work on MacOS 7.6.1/8.x/9.x (68k and PPC) http://www.anomic.de/AnomicFTPServer/

I don't know if I'm ready to dive into Linux, but I will definately consider that in the future (college! yeah!). I emailed the crush guy and he said he'd give me the $50 crush for $25, which is his standard eductional discount. I might just go for that, but i'm still thinking.

But how about this remote access? I don't even really have to control the computer, i just want to be able to see the files and stuff like I would if I was on a LAN.

VNC is your best bet. It's free and lets you view and control the remote computer.

At least download the 30 day trial of crushftp, and try if it runs well enough on your 7100, before you buy it.

Yes. It works between all systems. You can control Windows from a Palm Pilot.
