So I have to take the .nrg image to a PC with a DVD burner to burn a file that I can play on a DVD player or perhaps on a Mac with a DVD drive? Is there no easier way to achieve this?

Buy the original DVD, that's easier.

If it were a commercial DVD, I would, but it's not (and its not pron either). It's a TV-rip of an obscure documentary shown some years ago on the BBC.
For all you legal beagles out there, where does the law (I'm in Japan) stand on dling a TV-rip and burning a DVD for personal use? Is this a no-no?

I had a feeling I was going to read something along these lines.

The thing is you got an answer pretty clear, Nero disc image files needs to be burned using Nero, so you are out of luck in the Mac. You asked for an easier solution, and I provided one, without saying anything more.

I am afraid I cannot provide any more easier solutions, other than maybe email Nero development team and ask them to make a OS X version.

the makers of nero seem to go out of their way to make their useless format awkward t burn on anything other than thier user interface disaster of a program. Thats why theres about 40 something variations of a file format which all use .nrg. Some of them as simple as a standard ISO file but with a few 0's at the start to render it unreadable on something other than nero (unless you know to remove these) but newer versions of the .nrg format are a bit more obscure and as pointless as ever.

"REMEMBER THE BURN ICON IS 7TH ON THE LEFT"
Thanks nero, maybe if it looked like a burn icon and was in a more logical position you wouldn't need to tell me.

HOWEVER!
two programs MIGHT help you
nrg2iso - no idea where i found it but it can turn some nrg's to iso's
gumby - this can do the same
but neither have worked that great with any nero image I've tried. But keep in mind ones i usually have are a bit obscure with multiple sessions etc.

To answer my own question--it is very easy and free to do.
Download Gumby 1.0 beta 47 from Version Tracker.
Launch aforementioned Gumby. Select BIB(CHUNKER) TAB.
Drag .nrg file onto Gumby window.
Gumby will identify the file as a Nero disk image and ask if you want to convert to iso and the iso file destination.
After deciding name and destination, click Process button and it will take about 5 minutes to convert the .nrg file into an .iso (which I am watching as I type this).
Many thanks to the Gumby coders (This application can also convert a whole load of other formats too.)
