Im trying to decide between the following:

PowerLogix G3/1GHz with 1MB cache at 1GHz
Sonnet G4/1GHz with 1MB cache at 250MHz

The G4 is about $100 more. Is it worth it? We use our beige for AltiVec-enhanced apps from time to time, but not on a particularly regular basis; Im primarily looking to speed up the OS and web applications, e.g. Safari, Mail (searches are a bear!), and Dreamweaver. Im especially concerned about switching between applications, or even between windows in the same application. The screen draws on the G3 are absolutely abysmal.

Quite frankly, the cache concerns me a bit. With the G3s cache being at 1:1, shouldnt it smoke the G4 in screen redraws, etc.? Or are we looking at this the wrong way altogether, and the New World architecture of a cheap Yikes! G4 on eBay would help more than quadrupling the processor speed in our beige? (We dont want to spend the money on a new computereven just an eMacbecause weve put so much into this one and besides, we already have a dual-2GHz G5 as our main computer.)

Thanks!

The G3.

The Sonnet G4 drops the bus to 66MHz.

My beige G3 has a 66MHz bus anyway.

Good to know, though!

Well, thats what I get for not reading your post.

Don't be afraid to look at the 900MHz 750FX G3 from PowerLogix. They are still selling it for $249.

G3 all the way. I was going to upgrade my beige G3 with the 1Ghz zif, but now I have enough for a new imac 20"...
