Where does everyone else stop hearing it?

[EDIT] that came from digg, so its likely to go offline soon... when that happens, let me know. I backed up all the samples but I don't want to rape my own bandwidth as long as the original files are still available.

[EDIT, part II ] OK, if i turn the volume way up I can barely hear 21, but 22 is still dead silence.

Hmm. I could hear the 20k sine wave at the recording studio in my early 20's. Now 15k gets guiet, & 16k is barely there. Of course it could be my headphones.

Actually, he freaks out, in a good way, because he gets to play fetch. We have to walk him a couple blocks to find an area large enough to play fetch with him. He's half Lab and half greyhound. We have to keep our bedroom door locked or else he wakes us up in the middle of the night by dropping a tennis ball or flying disc on our heads while we're sleeping. I'll have post a video of him fetching sometime. He gets mad if he can't catch it in mid-flight.

I stop at 16,000 (30 years old), totally quiet. My wife stops at 14,000 (27 years old) and my mom can't hear 13,000 (52 years old).

Um, because it is based on commercial product where you place a mic that you install somewhere that emits that tone. What somebody did was just recored that sound and put it on the internet as a ringtone.

And I doubt someone put a mic up to a tone emitter to record a simple ~15Khz tone. But it does look like there's a pattern with the second test. People seem to be dropping off as their age goes up. A 20KHz tone would be quite effective.

In the test MacMan4000 linked to, I can hear up until (and including) 17,000 perfectly clearly. I can only clearly hear 18,000 if I move my ear closer to the speaker [inserted note: just tested in earbuds—could make it out more clearly there, but still nowhere near as well as 17,000], and I can’t really hear 19,000 or 20,000, though I can sort of ‘feel’ them still. I can feel there’s something playing (it slightly affects my vision, oddly), but I can’t consciously hear it as sound.
