My coworker/ neighbor has a 12in Pbook 867mhz with a completely busted hard drive and a dead battery. He asked me to sell it on ebay but the prices are way too low for such an old computer (especially since he'd probably have to ship it from Japan to the US).

I'm thinking of buying from him, hook up an old external firewire drive I have to boot off of, plug in a cheap wireless keyboard and mouse, and turning it into a little TV media center.

Ideas on this? Sound like a good idea? $100-$150 sound like a decent idea?

Seems like a decent idea to me. How much data are you looking at here?

The little external firewire drive I have is 3 GB. Hopefully just enough for an OS. I figure that I'll just either wireless stream media off my other computer OR just move the external HD with all the media I have to my TV stand and leave it plugged into the 12in. Either way, easy access.

How much do you think a 12in 867mhz with a busted HD is worth? (Yes, I've checked ebay prices. I wanted your opinions)

It's prolly worth around $175-$200. Keep in mind that it won't be able to play HD content though, it just doesn't have the power.

HD content isn't really much fo a worry for me. Lord knows I don't even have a HD TV. Mostly I was think downloaded TV shows and movie (which I do a lot over here in Japan) as well as music (though I do have an airport express plugged in behind my TV for that reason).

I'm going to see if he goes for a bit over $100. Without a hard drive or a working its more or less worthless online. For $300 I could just buy an AppleTV, or I could stop being lazy and just carry my Macbook Pro into the other room and hook it into my TV.

Oh well. So goes life.

Questions: I know a Powerbook will work with an external display with the lid shut with a wired keyboard and mouse. Will it also work with an RF Keyboard and mouse? Say one with a USB RF thingy?

Might be better off with bluetooth.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....
