Hey all,

I was over at a friend's house, and here Epson 580 throws up an "unknown error (please disconnect your printer and blabla authorized service personnel blabla)" when trying to print/get status info/etc.

Worked fine until a few days before. Apple System Profiler still sees it, and it still does its whole grinding song and dance when connected/disconnected from the machine.

The printer is selected in the Chooser (Appletalk settings make no difference), and the standard Epson print dialog shows up. It then prepares the print and gets an error when it tries to send the data to the printer.

I've tried trashing the preferences, but that didn't help.

I'd done a restart from an OS 9.2.2 boot CD, which contained 740i drivers, but I doubt that made a difference - unless it loaded the wrong firmware into the 580 or some such idiocy...

Also done a PRAM reset.

Any ideas whatsoever?

Is the printer still able to print the test page (printing without being connected to the computer)?

The 580 has no buttons.

The user manual describes printing a test page as "open this page in your favorite browser and click 'print'", which obviously doesn't work.

Trying a driver reinstall next.

I have my doubts.
