Okay, this may seem like a dumb question.

Do I have to do anything special when putting an image on the screen to make sure that the image is not split in half during the first refresh? Does OS X automatically synchronize the frame buffer with the refresh on the display?

I know that Halo has a special option where you can force it to synchronize with your monitor to reduce "tearing," so I'm curious what I would have to do to implement this behavior on my own... if I have to at all.

BTW... I officially have a programming job, so you guys will probably see a little more of me in here.

I've never really looked into it, but Quartz Debug includes a beam synch palette. I assume there are some CoreGraphics calls (probably hidden, since I've never seen them) to do it.

Anyway, Apple also provides a more manual way of syncing with the beam in CGDirectDisplay.h.

BTW, I'm a Cocoa guy having to convert to Carbon. I went to four bookstores today (Borders and B&N) and couldn't find a single book on Carbon (there were quite a few on Cocoa, though). Are developers actually converting from Carbon to Cocoa? Any idea on this? Is it just because I went to stores in a ritzy area?

Another update:

http://developer.apple.com/releaseno...HIToolbox.html

Apparently, this feature was included automatically with 10.4. Some developers are complaining about it. It's the "coalesced updates" feature.

Yep. Though for the most part Cocoa developers are new to the platform rather than ex-Carbon coders. Probably because if you "get" Cocoa, trying to understand Carbon is very difficult, heck even more than basic CoreFoundation stuff is hard. And for those who "get" Carbon, Cocoa is like Klingon Shakespeare: beautiful to some, but absolutely foreign.
I bring order to chaos. You are in chaos windows, you are the contradiction, a bug wishing to be an OS.
