I've tried fast user switching and just logging in at startup, but I seem to have lost the ability to login to the >console. When I try, the screen turns blue, but then the login window just reappears again and it goes back to the default background. Tried repairing permissions, zapping the PRAM. Anyone have any ideas?

It will do that if another user is logged in, because then it can't quit LoginWindow, I believe.

Okay, that explains why I can't do it from the FUS window. I still can't log in normally to it. Also, if I boot up in verbose mode, when I try I get the error "... /dev/console: Operation not supported" then in about 40 seconds it goes back to loginwindow.

It doesn't work with fast user switching enabled. I had to turn it off in the account prefs, then reboot.

It didn't work for me until i turned off vnc - try switching off ARD in the system preferences and reboot.
Then >console run level should work. It did here anyhow..
HTH?

sure, but it wouldn't work for me before switching of ARD (other vnc like apps?) and (iirc) remote logins. So go2 your Sharing prefs.pane and disable everything temporarily and then log out. Now try and log in again with just " >console " as the username..
HTH? But works here
