Well, I am responsible for doing the layouts of my gradschool's newsletter and I just found out that the computers in our cluster don't have FrontPage. On my Mac at home, I have AppleWorks 5, and old version of Quark (I think like 3 or 4), Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, and Fireworks. Which of these would be the best program to use. What other low-cost suggestions would people suggest. What other alternatives are there?

If it's a print newsletter I wouldn't be looking at html editors like frontpage.
If it's an online newsletter I still wouldn't look at frontpage!

Erm, I'd probably try appleworks first. but then I've never used Xpress or Indesign or �

Photoshop? Nope. I wouldn't dream of doing a newsletter in PS, for a start it can't do multipage documents and it's not called photoshop because it's fort� is text layout.

can illustrator or freehand handle multipage documents?

Use QuarkXpress. It's a page layout application made for such tasks. And I assure you that you can learn enough by simply dabbling.

Apple Works is like Word, a word processing app not suited for the task at hand.

Freehand is an illustration app a'la Illustrator and you'll just pull your hair out. Now if you want to do a logo for the newsletter these are great apps. But terrible for page layout.

Photoshop?? Never. Fireworks is the Macromedia equivalent of Photoshop.

I didn't mean FrontPage, I meant whatever the M$ equivalent for Quark was. I just found out that the school does have FileMaker Pro and some Omni program (I realize that doesn't tell you much). But since I do have Quark 4 I will probably use that. Thanx!!

p.s. The reason that I asked about Photoshop/Illustrator and all of the art apps was that my uncle used to have his artists use Photoshop to do the company catalog for his Clothing company every year. Check out the site, they might have an online version: www.5sun.com

There is no MS equivalent to Quark. There is MS Publisher but. . .

Freehand can handle smaller documents like a newsletter just as well as Quark. It only really crumbles when using very large documents (40+ pages I would say)

Freehand 10 has master pages, and, in my opinion, better type than Quark (quark doesn't even have hanging punctuation!)
It also allows for varying page sizes in the one document - something I don't believe Quark can do.

the best thing about Publisher, is the first 3 letters...

i remember laughing for about 10 minutes, solidly, at my dad, the day he became editor of a national magazine. he used to use M$ Pub, and he thought he could just hand the printer a .pub file!

he got a verbal slapping, and now he's a Quark monkey. i've only had to help him out about 3 times in 14 months too. mostly with a nice front cover, but some minor glitches too. not bad for a 65 year-old coffin dodger!

Well, I already started the project using Quark, so I'll see how well it goes. My major grip with the program is that he interface is pre- 8.6 (8.0 I think). Stuff I am so used to doing, like selecting and object and pressing delete to get rid of something, does not work (instead you hvae to use a keyboard command or the Item menu). In otherwords, since I have never used this program before it is taking longer than usualy to figure out how to do stuff. Still, it is a Mac, so things can't be that complicated.

Another gripe (minor) is that all of the graphics (fonts and pictures) are not anti-aliased. Everything looks crappy until it prints (please no one make the obvious joke here- it is too easy).

Whoa. That explains a lot. I've had to reject an unusual number of floppy disks with .pub files on them in the last year...

Of course, then, the secretary goes back to work and emails me a 1" .gif exported from her .pub file so I can print from that...

(Insert sound of me pulling my own head off)
