I want to get into this program and become decent, and i'm looking for a good intro to maya book that will help me get started and teach me the basic and then some. any suggestions?

The help files that come with Maya are a good start. You can also go to most major booksellers (Borders, Barnes and Noble, etc) and find a nice selection of Maya books in the computer section. There are a variety of books available, so I would recommend flipping through them to see which one might suit your needs.
