Hey all, I'm thinking of taking some photography classes, and my wife already has. I don't know for sure if this will just be a hobby, or something more. I'm wondering if an iBook 800 would be fast enough to use the popular photo editing apps or not (photoshop, etc, etc) I don't just want the program to run, I know it will do that. I'd like it to be somewhat speedy (as fast as a G3 could be) in these apps. Would I be ok with the iBook, or should I opt for something like the PBG4 667 or 800 ?

Thanks,
cSurfr

an ibook will get you by, no doubt. but, if you have the cash, bigger is better. plus, you can put more ram in a powerbook. then there's the fact that the g4 processor handles os x better. finally, i think you get a killer deal on photoshop when you buy a powerbook.

oh, one other thing, the bigger screen will make you mucho happy, guaranteed.

good luck with the decision and with the photography. once you're up and running check out:

great fun and free, too.

If you do decide to go with the iBook, which handles photoshop fine, get the biggest hard drive they'll put in it (40Gig, I think) Its like $100, and doesn't seem worth it at the time, but it will when you run out of space, and you have to void your warranty to get a new one put in there (or put it in yourself).

Also, don't buy Apple's ram. get it somewhere else, and you'll save a lot of money. (except for the 14", I think they have a ram promotion.) I'd get as much Ram in that iBook as you can get, too. I bought from 18004memory.com, and they were good for me, but I've heard of some people having problems with them, so you might want to look into that.

Wayy more information that you were probably looking for. What else am I going to do this afternoon, though?
