So... I've ordered an iMac and Parallels. I need to buy a version of Windows (and I'll need at least XP Professional to log into my company's server). Do I buy a copy of the just-about-to-be-obsolete XP Professional SP2, or do I buy a copy of the just-about-to-be-released Vista? Or, is there a way to get XP with an upgrade to the new version (best of both worlds)?

Any wisdom would be welcome!

IIRC the Windows license allows you to run the version you buy or any previous version; buy Vista (media and license) for the future, and then buy the XP media (which is like $5).

What do you mean by "IIRC"?

Thanks for the advice. Once I buy Vista, how do I get the XP media?

Just get a copy of XP Pro, it will be cheaper than Vista Business. XP won't be End-of-Life for quite a few years from now. BTW, Vista Home and Home Premium licenses restrict you from using them virtually.

IIRC = If I recall correctly
I'm still not convinced my previous statement is true; it may only apply to the corporate licensing. You can read the Vista EULA to see.
Search on Froogle for "windows xp cd media" or similar. Unfortunately I'm sure the results will be mixed in with the Media Center Edition.

Parallels doesn't support all the necessary features to make Vista worthwhile (won't support the Aero Glass UI appearance). I say get XP Pro. I installed Vista RC2 through Parallels a while back - basically seemed like XP with a Vista skin. Pretty useless. Deleted it.

If you choose to install Boot Camp and reboot the machine into Windows, then Vista might be an option.
