Very nice machine. I think Apple will support Universal binaries for a niiiiice long time to come, and other companies less so.

There's always the dudes that JUST bought the model before the line where the specs were shifted majorly. Just look at Classic. Steve Jobs said it was "dead" (literally) what, 3 years ago? Universal binary will be here for awhile while those folks demand compatability.
My vote was for "5 years."

3-4 years after the transition is complete. That's about how long fat binaries were around for.

I bought a G5 in June because my last mac (G4/400) has lasted me for the six years
preceding that (and indeed is still in use as a house server).
I fully expect to use this machine at least five years even if I do purchase another
Intel Mac down the line. My G5 would make a great webserver down the line if
another machine becomes primary over my current box.

Yeah and by then, if Apple's support is waning, one of the BSDs or Linux distributions will run extremely optimally on it anyways...
