Levy: Gone, Without a Trace | Newsweek Voices - Steven Levy | Newsweek.com
On Sundays in my apartment, the coffee table where the Air sat becomes the final resting place for the bulky New York Times. It is not unusual for other magazines, and newspapers from previous days, to accumulate there as well. My wife, whose clutter tolerance is well below my own, sometimes will swoop in and hastily gather the pulp in a huge stack, going directly to the trash-compactor room just down the hall from our apartment, dumping the pile into a plastic recycling bin.
He blames his wife.

Well, that's a whole new reason to dumpster-dive.
I'd have serious reservations about getting the Air (not because of my wife, she never throws out ANYTHING!) because I run a computer lab at my school and I lock-down my MacBook so it can't be stolen, but the Air is so thin it has no lock so I'd have to carry it everywhere with me or risk "losing" it like this guy.

The MBA doesn't have a lock slot ?
Not that those prevent serious theft in intentions.

Well, they aren't intended to do that.

How do folks who worry about losing a MB Air deal with other things in life like cash money, credit cards, passports, etc.? Sheesh!

What surprises me more is how little he cared about taking care of a $1,000+ item. It seems that he was aware of his wife's need to clean up his coffee table so the last thing he should have done was let the MBA be hidden within his pile of newspapers and magazines. If I had something as nice as the MBA there would a dedicated shrine space on my desk for it.

Or maybe you could just get a desktop.

Well what I meant was a shrine space for where you would leave it when you are not using it. I have a place where I store my PowerBook when I'm not using it so that it doesn't get damaged. I guess he doesn't care about damage as much because I would worry about roommates/spouse accidentally spilling beverages on it or other damages if I just left it lying around. I do also have a desktop if you really wanted to know.

that sucks, but it's life. Guess he'll pay more attention to cleaning up his clutter.

I bet Steven can afford another, FWIW. He's been a profile columnist for quite some time.
