Hey all, figured I'd ask this question here because the iMac/mini forum isn't always the most useful.

I put a new HD in my mom's mini last spring, and apparently the thing was a POS because it's already dead. Her old one still works, and it's fine cause we got her a new one for Christmas. But the whole thing got super corrupted. Booted it in Target mode and I couldn't really pull anything more than a few megs at a time off. Anyone got any suggestions? I thought of putting it in the freezer or something but I don't know if that would help. I'm pretty sure the whole thing is just damaged.

CharlesS had a good tip recently about improving the odds of pulling data from a bad but somewhat responsive HDD. http://forums.macnn.com/58/imac-emac...c/#post3887176

Yeah. Make regular backups.

I second the link to CharlesS' suggestions.

Either that or "cp -R", when it can't read a file, it will time out and move on.

Also, Time Machine!!!!!

Not giving the appropriate forum the chance to answer your question sort of guarantees it won't be "the most useful," doesn't it?

I second the very strong suggestion to do regular backups. I also second reading CharlesS' thread about data recovery.

And at the very least, since this is not a Lounge subject, couldn't you have put it in the "Consumer Hardware & Components" forum based on the hard drive? The "system" won't work if you don't use it...
