Following a longer-than-expected submission process to Apple, we're pleased to report that
episode 10 of
The MacNN Podcast, along with all previous episodes, has
finally arrived on iTunes. Listeners can now search for, subscribe to, and generally wallow in our backlog of tech news, app picks, and bad jokes. The latest episode has a couple of remote reports from Australia and the UK about the Apple Watch concierge try-on experience, the arrival of Photos with OS X 10.10.3, our new videos, and more.
Join your host,
MacNN Editor Charles Martin, along with Managing Editor Mike Wuerthele, and guest appearances by Sanjiv Sathiah and William Gallagher as we discuss the events of the week, including some important security news. We also debate the iPhoto replacement program Photos, mention some of the notable apps we looked at, and shamelessly plug our new video department. Here's the show notes for this week:
00:51 Well not everyone -- including Apple -- saw
that coming: the Apple Watch pre-orders didn't just do well, they
sold out planet-wide at every price point, within minutes. Now we are faced with the amusing (or infuriating) prospect of an official launch day where nobody at all will be able to buy an Apple Watch, and it looks like nobody other than press reviewers (and perhaps the first lucky buyers) will have one on launch day.
08:17 Sanjiv and William file pre-recorded reports about their experience with the Apple Watch hands-on in store, where the rest of us can go to see them first-hand, try them on, and wonder if we can get one before Christmas. We also discuss the AppleCare prices for the different watches, and other aspects of the launch.
22:01 There's a new set of security patches out for Yosemite (OS X 10.10.x) and earlier supported version (10.9 Mavericks, 10.8 Mountain Lion) that corrects various flaws. One
fairly serious vulnerability, however, is only being fixed for OS X 10.10 and later due to the serious re-architecting required, according to Apple. To be fair, this attack appears to require physical access to the machine and one's password, so the odds of anyone being subject to it appear to be extremely low, but it is an unusual move from the company. As a result, we suggest that all Mac users on 10.8 and later upgrade to 10.10.3, particular as it appears to be a particularly good release on a number of fronts.
32:54 We take a few minutes to spotlight a couple of our Living With columns, specifically talking about the long-term use
of iBooks and the
Apple TV. The verdict: iBooks is good but could use some re-thinking, while the current Apple TV is such a delight that its hard to know how Apple could significantly improve on it, apart from the "Voice Search" feature rivals have incorporated.
52:06 We've started making videos when needed for our reports again after a long hiatus, and this means little improvements like, you know, HD quality and animated titles and Final Cut use and such. We're very pleased with two new videos in particular: an
unboxing video for a high-end Origin PC gaming computer (more on that machine in future articles, but this is a fun first look), and a product piece on
the Blue Snowball USB mic to accompany yet another Living With column.
57:51 With our regular product reviewers unavailable this week, we turn to Managing Editor Mike to see what apps he's looked at lately. He discusses SoftRAID for OS X, which he'll be reviewing in a future article;
MLB At Bat for this year, which is shaping up to be another excellent entry; and the hilarious
Carnage Crossing, a game that takes
Frogger to new and messier levels.
