So, apparently this 13-year-old kid tried to steal someone's password over MSN.

Let's just say karma came back to bite him. Talk about walking right into it...

What an absolute idiot, that kid.

“Unlike you, I actually work for Valve, and know that Valve will never ask for your account information. Now, what’s your user name and password?”

Edit: Was there an original meaning of ‘pwnt’?!?

Pronunciation? Punctuation?

(Also: about 90 per cent of the ‘officials’ I’ve dealt with in writing have been quite bad spellers, so I’m not at all disinclined to see that as realistic enough)

I think it's bad enough that you can safely assume it was intentional.

The etymology of the term pwn is believed to be rooted in a typographical error arising from the close proximity of the 'p' key to the 'o' key on a standard keyboard. Initially — that is, before the term's adoption into the 1337 lexicon — "pwn" was generally parsed as an honest error and pronounced "own." Eventually, as the word took on a life of its own and began to convey a meaning stronger and more specialized than that of "own", its pronunciation began to vary as detailed below.

I'm pretty sure that "pwned" came from a typo for "owned," as in "dominated." It started in the online gaming community.

I'm not sure how it then went from "pwned" to "pwnt," but the first time I saw it was in a fan-made anime music video called Fullmetal Hell. It had pretty much the same meaning there.

I’m sure the Welsh had something to do with it, somehow.
