While in Safari...in the menu bar...Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks
Select the bookmarks you want to delete, then hit the Delete key.

hmmmm...You checked all the Collections? History, Bookmars Bar, etc? How about your default homepage (Preferences > General > Homepage)?
Be sure to flush your cache, too (Safari > Empty Cache...)
And restart Safari afterwards.

How does this bookmark show-up? Is it automatically loading in Safari? Or is it just appearing in your bookmarks menu?

Is it a bookmark at all? Or are you talking about the Top Sites?

I have no such "group".

Do you mean the Top Sites feature, where you see twelve little previews of frequented pages arranged in a grid when you open a new window?

i just mean the drop down bar headed bookmark, which has about 14 of your first marks listed - then you later ones appear after those.
my 'problem' bookmark is in those first group
it does NOT appear under 'show bookmarks' - just in my first 14.
so i don't know where to delete it from, if you see what i mean
i hope that that is now clearer?

What is the "drop down bar"?

Do you mean the Bookmarks in the menu bar item "Bookmarks" at the top of the screen?

Click on the little bookmarks symbol in the bookmarks bar below the individual windows' address entry field to manage bookmarks.

It's the third item at left, below "Recent" and "Bookmarks bar".

The bookmarks in the menu, btw, are NOT the most frequented or anything. They are created explicitly by user action. In other words, they exist because you put them there—whether by accident or otherwise.

I don't understand.

ALL the Bookmarks in your Bookmarks menu are available via the method I described.

See:

At lower right, you see every single Bookmark that appears in the menu.

If you wish to delete any of them, just single-click on it and press the "delete" key on your keyboard. That's it.

Am I missing something, or are you missing something?

my mystery bookmark appears when you go down the bookmark bar, as one of the ones that appear automatically at the bottom of the scroll down list
but it doesn't appear when you choose 'show all bookmarks'
which is really strange and why i now want to delete ALL bookmarks
get me now? sorry to make it difficult to understand

Try deleting the User > Library > Safari > Bookmarks.plist file.

I gave you the path. Open a Finder window. Along the left sidebar, you will see, under Places, the selection for your account (whatever you've named it) Click on that. Then, select Library. Then select Safari. Then select Bookmarks.plist. delete it.

Not on Lion.

If you're on 10.7 Lion, hold down the alt/option key and select "Library" from the Go menu in the Finder. It won't show up otherwise.

Are you using XMarks or something similar? What is the name of the bookmark you're trying to eliminate? "Unsorted Bookmarks" seems to always come back but all others are deletable.

i have just reloaded lion to try and get rid of it, but it and all previous ones are still there!
i just can't find a way
deleting safari is forbidden by mac x, so what now?
