An icon has recently appeared in system preferences. It is labeled "MacFUSE". When I clicked on it, there was something in the pane saying it allows you to extend Mac OS X's file sharing abilities via a third-party network. Can someone explain that in words closer to English?

Some apps install it being Parallels one of them, have you installed Parallels?

MacFUSE it is a driver that adds NTFS read/write access to Windows hard disks, something handy if you ever need to write stuff on NTFS Windows formatted hard disks. Poor explanation though.

MacFUSE is a framework. You can install several different file systems in it including networked file systems.

NTFS-3G is a 3rd party NTFS file system driver.

One application that is really cool is called MacFusion. This allows you to mount FTP & SFTP (SSH) volumes right on your desktop. Granted, OS X does this built in, but MacFusion is actually decently fast.
