Depends on how close you sit. Besides, if the prices are similar, why not go for 1080p?

I thought I read that even at close distance, you wouldn't be able to notice the difference between 1080p and 720p on 42".

Well, it might only be true for good 720p, so I dunno

All I see when I watch HDTV is compression artifacts. (which is, itself, an artifact of my last job, but that's a different story altogether.) If we ever buy an HDTV, I'll be looking for a 32" to 37" that does at least 1080i, preferably 1080p, in the hopes that the compression artifacts are less noticable.

I was originally planning on holding on to my SDTV until it died, until I realized that a lot of programming is now delivered to TV stations via HDTV feeds, so it's compressed anyway. I still think HDTV is a scam, but I'm going to have to buy into it if I don't want my TV picture to look like crap for the few shows that I watch.

hmmm found this deal

Buy the Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV and other LCD & Plasma TVs at circuitcity.com

i hear panasonic plasmas are great, but do plasmas still suffer from burn in? my current rear projection tv has sidebars burned in the image due to watching 4:3 on a 16:9 tv. I do not want to ever have burn in.

You're going to get burn-in on a plasma if you keep watching tv pillarboxed.
Don't get a plasma.

Yes, Plasmas suffer from burn-in, LCD and DLP sets do not.

Don't get a plasma.
Modern sets very rarely experience burn-in. The letterboxes are usually a neutral color (like gray) that won't burn in as easily. I have yet to experience burn-in on my Panasonic plasma, even after hours of playing games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero that have some static images up all the time.

Get a plasma - the picture is better.

On that one he'd have to be smart enough to set the pillarbox to come up gray, and he's already managed to ruin a rear-projection tv from burn-in.

I have the 50" version of the tv he's looking at, and I'll notice some ghosting from games such as rock band. He'll screw up that tv in no time.

Otherwise, I agree with you statement. I love my plasma, though I'm really careful with it.

my current tv 42" toshiba rear projection has gray side pillar bars to prevent burn in, after 3 years there is burn in. it is very noticeable when i watch 16:9 programming with a light background like hockey or something. sadly i have the 4 yr warranty which doesn't cover burn in.

You have to set yours to gray? My 42" panny comes up that way by default. Strange.

Yes there is. Your cable company is required to send rebroadcasted channels (meaning the locals) unencrypted over their network, so as long as your toshiba has a QAM tuner you should be able to pick those up. Any other channels will be encrypted, though, and require either a cable card or a box.

Not really. I've never seen the default be gray on any tv. Don't care for it much either.

Did you buy a set yet?

Over the weekend I picked out a set for my parents, their first TV in 20 years actually so sort of a big deal. Anyway, HH Gregg had a Samsung 42" plasma for sale for 899.00, which is a really good price. Its 720p, but truthfully for most purposes, especially theirs, you'll not notice much of a difference. I have a Samsung 42" 1080p plasma and their new one is every bit as nice, just a few less features.

anyway, this wasnt an advertised price, might still be good though.

But, does the law impede them from downscaling local channels from HD to SD in the QAM re-broadcast? After all, cable companies are struggling with bandwidth now.
If not, I might stick with antenna-only reception. No way I am paying the "HD Access" fee.

I am fairly certain they aren't allowed to alter the signal in that way, but I could be wrong. You'd be better off asking on AVS.
