Ok, I have a 17" C2D w. a 2GHz C2D... the machine supports 3GB RAM... and the radeon x1600
It's my understanding that it uses intel's T7200 chip.. I have to opportunity to get an E6600 from a friend of mine.

Can I swap them? The T7200 has a 667MHz FSB and the E6600 is 1066MHz, how will the iMac handle that? Can it support the 1066? Can it support 800MHz?
15" MacBook Pro 2.0GHz i7 4GB RAM 6490M 120GB OWC 6G SSD 500GB HD
15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz C2D 2GB RAM 8600M GT 200GB HD
17" C2D iMac 2.0GHz 2GB RAM x1600 500GB HD

No. E6600 is a desktop chip with a different physical interface, never mind the bus speed (so it would run at 1.5Ghz if it even worked) and power consumption (way too hot). The best upgrade you can do is 2.33Ghz (T7600) for about $650.

And I'll bet the CPU is soldered down. (I could be wrong.)

All Intel iMacs (and Mac minis) have socketed CPUs, so they are replaceable.

Not sure where that FUD came from, perhaps you're thinking of the G5s which wouldn't allow upgrades even if they were socketed.

Cool! I didn't know this. Apple is notorious for not socketing. So are there any currently available CPUs that would work as a drop-in replacement or any that are coming soon (if you know)?

Any Core Solo, Core Duo, or early Core 2 Duo iMac/Mac mini can take any Core Duo or Core 2 Duo mobile chip with a 667Mhz FSB (2.33Ghz T7600 mentioned above is the fastest). The newer Core 2 Duo iMacs can take any Core 2 Duo mobile chip with an 800Mhz FSB and the 24" can take Core 2 Extreme mobile chips with an 800Mhz FSB.

I thought only the aluminum iMacs were socketed.

The Intel iMacs have been socketed since the first (Core Duo) release.

That sucks that Intel abandoned the socket so quickly. :| So much for the 'upgradeability' of PC's.

Yes, but no new chips fit in that socket. 2.66ghz is as fast as chips of that socket type will ever get.

Wait... so theoretically, I could up the processor in my CD 2 Ghz iMac to a C2D 2.66 Ghz?

No, the CD and white C2D iMacs use socket M (667 MHz FSB). Again, the fastest C2D you can put in there is the 2.33 GHz T7600. The new Al iMacs use Socket P C2Ds (800 MHz FSB) and the fastest model there is the 2.8 GHz X7900. It wil cost over $850 so good luck with that.

There is no such thing as a mobile Intel CPU with 2.66 GHz by the way. The 2.66 GHz E6700/E6750 is a desktop part and uses another socket, FSB, chipset, etc.
