I have a 6.12gig dmg file that I need to split up onto a couple of single layer DVDs. I did a little bit of googleing but this doesn't seem to be as common a problem as I would have thought.

Read the man page of hdiutil. The convert command has a -segmentSize argument that allows you to segment a disk image.

alternately, if the point is merely to split them so that they can be transfered via dvd and reassembled at the other end, 'split' would be an option as well. something like
split -b 4000m diskimage.dmg
should produce two out files (the first about 4GB, the second the remaining 2GB or so) that can be recombined at the other end with a
cat file1 file2 > fullfile

The advantage of hdiutil is that on the back end all you have to do is double-click on the first segment and they'll all join automatically.

true. the advantage of split is that it works on any file, not just disk images. of course, you could encapsulate the other file in a disk image...
