I can't get over the fact that I've been wasting time here for one third of my life!
And doing other things too. But still. It's like a neighborhood bar.
And now people can't smoke there.

I just realized how long it has been for me as well. I was 15 when I signed up here, and now I am a month away from turning 27!
What is interesting is that MacNN has always been on my daily rotation since I started reading online news sites. Many others have all left my rotation over time (I can't even remember them all, but MacRumors and MacCentral come to mind). But MacNN has a permanent spot as the first link in my bookmark bar!
[EDIT] Mods, is there anyway to see who the oldest active member is?

The gaps are people who haven't been around recently. I cherry-picked those who visited successively more recently. For example:
#002 AppleWeek (Jan 26, 1999) last visited the next day.

I think that people and their backwards ideas have shaped this place to a fault.
There were those that were clamoring for more moderation, more rules and adherence, more "just so" with not only the technical sections of this board, but the lounge too. I used to believe that the entire place should be less moderated, but I've since come around and have seen how it is helpful to have technical threads kept tidy with unrelated chatter down, in the right section, etc.
However, all of the other bicker fests about where a thread best belongs when things are a little gray, debates about what is useful content in the lounge, all of the other armchair modding over harmless stuff and overall anal-retentiveness in the lounge has created a rather uninviting climate to anybody that is not interested in things being just so in the same way, and definitely uninviting to people with strong opinions which spawn more of the meow meow let-me-campaign-to-make-macnn-my-perfect-little-organized-and-orderly-world back and forth consternation about stuff that doesn't really matter a whole lot in a lounge. I think the lounge should be just like a bar is in real life, far more hands off. It is a lounge, it doesn't need the same sort of structure and form and people bickering and debating over crap, just let it be, let it be what it wants to be, tell all the complainers to lighten and remember what a lounge is in real life, and how there are no rules as to how to lounge properly. Plus, I'm tired of wearing pants.
I think that if we were to try this this place would return to its former glory. In the meantime, I feel like I'm on my own to entertain your asses, and frankly I don't think that I'm appreciated here enough.
I also think random censoring along the lines of my steal censor will light some fire under people's asses and get things moving in here.

As far as Laminar's good point about YouTube comments go, I think we just have to rely on leaders like me to set the tone in here, and make the Youtubers feel silly speaking like they do in here. We pretty much do that now... I don't think that a more hands off approach to stuff in the lounge will result in this place becoming YouTube, not unless we start seeing more videos of cats playing pianos...

Wow, you really have become quite mean in the last few years, I liked you better when you were Gossamer.
Wombat was just a subset of the MacNN that was unknown and had no real reason for existing to people that weren't familiar with MacNN. It was actually originally called "Not MacNN", but I was threatened with a massive lawsuit for upwards of three million dollars. No work went into promoting it, no work went into expanding membership, I didn't care, it was an experiment to see what would happen if a random board was created with very limited rules, the results were mixed mostly because the only person with differing viewpoints and strong opinions we ever got in there was Abe, and he wanted to post pictures of naked people in there or something and I was concerned over going non-family friendly, so we scared him off (maybe it was our censoring him that scared him off though, I don't remember).
I know this sounds like sour grapes, but I honestly didn't put more than a few hours into maintaining and building upon the place in total, and a lot of that was for spam related purposes. I figured that there was little point because there was never really a compelling draw there like MacNN has with its MacNN parent site and Mac stuff in general.
All of this being said and the point behind this, I don't think that this necessarily is smoking gun evidence that fewer rules = failure.

I've been here about 5 years, and don't contribute as much as a lot of you. But I do like coming back everyday to get my Apple news and help. And have also liked reading all the arguments going back and forth and the Lounge is another reason why I come back. Because a tech forum without anything else is a little boring.
I am also amazed at all the members that have been here for so long and are still active. Not join for a month and then leave. And at my rate I don't see my post count getting close to half of what most of you guys have.

I still post on rare occasion if you look in the last few months. What number would I weigh in at (joined Oct 1999) ? And Voodoo is right, the forums are wayyyy less active than before. For me its because I got out of the computer field and stopped having as much time to mess with new hardware and software (hence, fewer questions asked and fewer answers given). Also, I did the Pol/War lounge for a while but that just broke down to pure ideologues on on all sides (same as general political discourse these days, I suppose). Any discussion that gets too complex or nuanced ends up being way too much to actually write out in a computer forum.

Old powermac? They only got rid of the beige G3 a few weeks ago! My parents only bought one computer since then (an iMac G5) so they still don't even have an intel based Mac.
I do remember being very jealous of the pismo you had though. Now that was a great machine.
