So I upgraded my 800mhz Quicksilver to 10.2.5, and since then, I've had three kernal panics, each when the machine goes to screen saver. Any ideas? Can I do anything to prevent this other than not using screen saver?

Thanks,

Fats

Any screensaver, or just one particular?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I've been having panics also. Usually about 5 minutes after starting up, they just happen. Did a clean reinstall of 10.2 on a different disk and after updating to 10.2.5, I still get them when I boot under this new system. Now I'm trying to figure out if its something on the USB.

I am getting this behavior also and it also seems to happen when the screen saver is activated or shortly after.

Mine has nothing to do with the screensavers. By the logs, I am assuming it has something to do with USB.

Obvious questions--do either of you have any 3rd party screen savers installed?

Nothing wrong here so far. Never had a problem with any updates. Ever. I'm the coolest.

Yeah, what the dude above me said -- what screensavers are crashing you guys? This could be the problem -- maybe e-mail the developers of the screensavers if they're 3rd-party ones. Good luck.

I had a system freeze (force quit failed) within the first 5 mins on a dual 500. Ironically the machine was reading this EXACT thread !!!

Do they ever test this **** anymore at Apple??

Sigh

I had one kernel panic earlier today with 10.2.4, but havent had one since i installed 10.2.5. It had to do with me pulling the video cable and usb mouse at the same time almost

themes gave me many panics after the 10.2.4 update. are you guys using any GUI modifications? try downloading the 10.2.5 combo updater and see if that fixes anything.

Still nobody has posted which screensaver...

For what it's worth, I haven't had a kernel panic yet. Manual screensaver startup works fine too.

I'm running no third party screen savers, and have no alternate themes.

My G4 crashed for the first time in ages after installing the 10.2.5 update. I was looking around to see if I could find the root of the problem and noticed that my problem also is related to USB.

Below are some of the lines from the system log. If I watch the log it keeps printing these errors over and over again. Something is not right with this update.

Example Log:
854.255 AppleUSBHubPort[0x20df500]::ReleaseDevZeroLock for port (2) force releasing lock

ControlTransaction: control packet 1 error 0xe0004057

I hope they get a fix out soon!

The people who this affects need to post their system specs, what hardware add-ons they have installed, peripheral devices they use, login items they have, and tell us what 3rd party system modifications (themes, haxies, etc.) they use, if any, so we can start to narrow down the cause. Crash logs such as what murk posted might also be useful to those who understand and care to step through them.

Complaining about a problem is one thing, but finding a reproducable example for developers is what gets problems fixed.

Just as I am doing now, you are adding absolutely nothing to this discussion. If you're not having this problem, or you're not offering a solution, than why would you just pop in to say you have no problem with the update.

Are you such an Apple gaybot that you can't stand for people to have problems with their OS X software without you saying that your experience has been without any problems?

That is so lame. It's is just like posting "me too" comments, except in your case it's an "opposite from me" post. Thanks for providing me with some material to rant against. I do not mean to insult you in a personal manner though.

I just feel that users such as yourself give the Mac a bad name. OS X is not perfect. It is okay to admit that. It is obviously a great system, but there are bound to be snags along the way.

I just implore everyone not to resort to jackass behavior when people have legitimate problems.

it's definetly something USB, as I disconnected everything USB and it no longer happens.

I have the Logitech driver installed, is this the common thread?

I can't even boot up with OS X.2.5. I installed it and now it won't boot (even after reinstallation).

I've apparently narrowed my problem to the Griffin PowerMate. After unplugging just it, I have ran panic free for several hours. I guess I need to work on this a while longer to be certain. I've got three hubs loaded with USB devices. Could it just be the combo?

Same problem here. So I unplugged all my USB devices from the Belkin hub. I then plugged the keyboard into the back of the computer. Then everything is OK. No KP's.

I then plugged an Epson printer directly into my G4. It worked fine and did not KP. I then plugged the printer into my Belkin 7 port USB hub and the printer would not show up in Print Center nor in Classic Chooser.

I then plugged the mouse back into the Belkin hub and the cursor would not move so I plugged the mouse again directly into the computer.

Haven't had a kernerl panic since disabling the Belkin hub.

Narrowing it down!

I installed 10.2.5 last night, and when I woke the machine just now, it KP'd. Then, during startup, it KP'd again while showing the apple logo and spinning wait indicator.

It restarted fine after that and hasn't crashed again, but it's only been half an hour.

I don't have much plugged in:

USB devices:
Deskjet printer
Bluetooth dongle
keyboard->mouse
(I do have the Griffin PowerMate drivers installed, but the device isn't plugged in)

I also have an external firewire HD.

Here's the relevant part of my panic.log:

I'm the original poster with the 4 kernel panics since 10.2.5. Here's what I got:

g4 800 1.25 gb ram

USB plugged into the back of the g4:

microsoft natural keyboard
griffin powered USB hub

into the griffin:

dLink Bluetooth adaptor
canon u1240 scanner

into the keyboard:

logitech wireless optical mouse receiver

I'll try and narrow down. Where do I check my logs?

Thanks!

pardon my switcher naivete, but please explain "kernel panic": what happens, and how do you resolve/get out of it?

There is an issue with USB hubs as witnessed from other posts (one even in PB section on MacNN). But the sad fact remains- if you have a KP then wouldn't it be more helpful to post what you have plugged in or what kind of screensaver you are running- some, any kind of details? And for the love of all things holy, please refrain from the ubiquitous (and quite worthless) responses such as "no problems here."

Seems like it may be an issue with powered hubs somehow. I had a KP last night with 10.2.5 but it had run rock-solid all day after the upgrade, I didn't have a problem until I hooked my machine up to my Belkin 4 port hub. Interesting...

To quote Apple:

"A kernel panic is a type of error that occurs when the core (kernel) of an operating system receives an instruction in an unexpected format, or that it fails to handle properly. A kernel panic may also follow when the operating system is not able to recover from a different type of error. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware."

Basicaly OS X has gone pear shaped in a big way...

When it happened before 10.2, the screen would go black, and white unix code would appear with loads of tech jargon/log details (and usually a witty UNIX programmer joke like "help we're hanging here...")

Nowdays you get a screen asking you to force restart the computer (written in a few different languages...) Very civilised and less scary!

Despite what Apple says, in my experience KPs usually signify a hardware issue, or issues with peripherals...

Up to OS X 10.2.4, I never had a single KP since the Public Beta days, however they have been a bit freqent this year...

Peace,

Marc

Just found a Kbase article in it :

A Kernal Panic is a when the kernal (the core of the operating system) locks up. When it occurs, you get a grey message on your screen (in several languages) that says your system has experianced a failure and you will need to reboot. Just hold the power button in for five seconds until the Mac restarts.

Incidently, I've not experianced a single kernal panic in over 3 years but others here have... and it is typically due to a hardware device and/or it's device driver.

I just got what looks likes the same kernel panic that other people are getting. It occured while a small third party screen saver was going but apart from that my system is pretty basic.

That would be a good idea. Then try plugging in each each USB device one at a time. If you get another panic when you plug something in you'll know where the problem lies. There's no guarantee that'll occur, though. Like any computer bug, KPs can be tough to track down.

Will I have to do anything like reinstall anything? restore?
No, you shouldn't need to reinstall anything (OS or software) when recovering from a solitary panic. If it persists and you've tried unplugging everything and making your MacOS as "vanilla" as you can (ie. uninstalling any software that modifies your OS) then I might suggest a clean install. If your KP is indeed from a driver/OS conflict, I suppose you'll need to upgrade your device driver (if possible) to correct the problem. That's everything I know about this subject.

G4 450 MHz, 512 MB RAM

I had several kernel panics until I disconnected the Belkin USB hub. I kind of need that hub, though. I'm going to fiddle around some more and see what happens.

I haven't had any problems with screensavers crashing but when I tried to run System profiler the system kept accessing the hard drive and completely locked up (would not force quit or anything) after about 5 minutes it quit the profiler. Later that night opening IE locked my system again. I let it sit like before but after 20min there was no activity. I shut it down hard and finder was obliterated. Oh, by the way I'm using a 17in AlBook (stantard). I also ran the hardware test and it found nothing wrong. It was just wierd because I had just installed the 10.2.5 update.

Most of the logs you have all posted say something like this:

0x00000001: .constructors_used
0x19b88444: IOUSBController::free()
0x19e4a684: AppleUSBHubPort::InitPortVectors()
0x19e4b478: AppleUSBHubPort::superClass
0x19e4b2e8: vtable for AppleUSBHub
0x0003eed0: __call_thread_continue
0x0003edd8: _call_thread_unblock

as you can see (if familiar with c++), this suggests that Apple has changed the implementation of their USB driver root class, causing things to break because manufacturers' drivers do not conform to what the system now expects.

so does that mean that they did this on pyrpose, or just left something out? Has anyone mailed apple with their problems, well, called them, you can't email them to my knowlage.

Personally I haven't had any problems after downloading last night and installing this morning, improvement in audio thought, hell's bell's doesn't crackle anymore in the intro. I don't have any hubs tough on the DP 1.0 gig machine that i have put it on. Probely a pointless suggestion but if you haven't done this already re-install the drivers, can't hurt anything.

I have same probs. Thought it was screensaver...don't think so, just helped.

Thought it was powermate...its not.

Belkin usb hub...97% sure. No problems after unplugging. Plugged it into my iBook (after taking from my iMac) and presto, kernel panics...randomly.

Strange circumstance; seems unlikely. It looks like a Belkin hub pattern.

Anyone using other hubs with 10.2.5?

I haven't had a panic since I unplugged the PowerMate. I've worked maybe 6 hours on the computer without this and let it run for quite a few more. I haven't had time to play around to see if plugging it back in starts the panics again. When I do get around to trying to reinstall the PowerMate, I may switch it to a different hub. I don't know if that will do anything, but its worth a try.

yeah it think it is a hub issue, but mine is a logitech hub so it's not just a BELKIN problem.

My Kernel Panics may be related to the PowerWave, also by Griffin Technology. Also somehow related to the screen saver (just using the flurry one). Never had KP before I bought it, and never get them now that I have disconnected it. Had many when it was connected. Most of the KPs were a window with a few languages that tell me to restart the computer. Under 10.2.5 the KPs happen with a frozen screen saver and KP text all over the screen. Not happy since I really like that PowerWave.

I'm using an 8 port USB hub with my G4 466 and:
1) iSub
2) HP 960 printer
3) Snapscan scanner
4) Keyboard/mouse
5) PowerWave (disconnect now)

If you too are getting them, would be nice to see if we have any parallels.

I have a powerwave as well but no panics with it installed. I only get panics with my usb hub. Wierd. Maybe different configs are the cause, but, undoubtedly usb caused.
