I try to have a policy that when someone dies, I do not belittle that death by going into the details of their life.

But unfortunately with politicians or powerful figures, really what they do politically IS what they are as a person. I may disagree and be disgusted by a conservative on this board, but I could know that they work hard all day to take care of their family. But with a politician, their life's work really is based on promoting their plan for the human race. If someone worked to take away health insurance for the poor for 20 years of their career, then that is what they really are as a person.

OTOH, while I don't feel bad that Falwell died, I WOULD feel bad if he was in pain, say after a heart attack or stroke. This differs from Rush Limbaugh, who has made jokes about people dying of AIDS. You can think being gay is "sick" but still have no interest in enjoyment or jokes when someone suffers a disease, even if you believe "they brought in on themselves"

He offended many, but I don't think Falwell was an evil man. Personally, I forgive him for saying God does not hear the prayers of Jews - he got slammed pretty hard for that remark.

The problem wasn't Falwell. The problem is that an ignorant fcuk like him can so successfully smear his extremist religious feces all over this country that the President of the United States..the President himself...even has to bow down.

This backwards, ignorant ignorant ignorant, racist m.f. had millions of followers..in this great(?) country and the balls of the White House in his hand....this is all you need to know about the state of our nation...and the state of Christianity for that matter.

Good riddance...our civilization has just evolved.

Uh, yeah, as a Jew that comment tops the list of his offenses - he was essentially saying Jews are rejected by God. That doesn't mean I condone his other offensive remarks.

Oh no. Implying that jews are rejected by God.

How about being responsible for the deaths of 9/11?
"“The ACLU’s got to take a lot of blame for this. ... And I know that I’ll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say: “You helped this happen.””"

It was pretty rude of him to say that G-d doesn't listen to the prayers of Jews. It was even ruder of him to denounce people on the basis of the choice of partner. As a Jew, I am irked by the former and extremely disturbed by the latter.

Don't worry. Jehovah doesn't listen to anyone's prayers. He got sick of whiners long ago. He's really into smiting people for fun. He really wishes it was like the old days of the old testament.

I'm curious as to why anyone would feel sorry for the bastard's family.

Does it make you feel better, or something?

Would you give the same respects to Osama Bin Laden's family?
Did you extend the same courtesy to Saddam Hussein's family?
When that Phelps guy dies, will you be as charitable to the Westboro Baptists?

What are Falwell's relatives to you?

Well one religion vs. another is one thing but being told that gays helped caused 9/11 when obviously they had no involvement with the attack or his religion is another.

To me that is hardly on the same level as "God can't hear you".

But whatever. Can we protest his funeral like some good Christian folks have taught us?

I don't have much use for Jackson, but I don't think he's in the same league as Falwell. We all step on our d!cks occasionally, but Falwell was an unrepentant d!ck-stepper.

Why wait? Lets see some Jesse Jackson quotes that rival Falwell's.

What kind of puss even feels the need to "smackdown" someone who's dead? How freakin' wussified is that?

What's the deal with far leftwingers feeling outrage over Falwell placing false blame on anyone other than the terrorists for 9/11, when various leftist kooks do the exact same thing virtually all the time?

The part where Hitchens is ranting at a dead guy for flying on private jets while telling other people they're sinners, sounds like he could have been talking about algore or any other charlatin who does the same thing.

I was never any Falwell fan, but geesh, will leftist twitwads get off their phony high horse already? Most lefty kooks hated this man, because he was the flipside of the SAME FUGLY coin you're on the other side of.

I personally think he has a point. I'm not defending Falwell nor do I give two shits about his life or death. What is amusing is how selective some assholes are when it comes to attacking religious *********s. I'm sure most of the peeps rejoicing in this mans death would be the same ****ers who would reflexively defend the life and "preachings" of other prominent ********s. Prominent ********s being random mullah, sharpton, farrakhan, arafat, etc.

Oh, and before you accuse me of defending Falwell, I personally believe him and his followers can get ****ed. Well, not him so much because he's dead and there aint no heaven. Game over.

Well, Hitchens, for one, is no defender of other prominent assholes. He can be plenty pissed of at, for example, radical and not-so-radical Islamists, Sharpton, andArafat too -- and some not usually considered assholes, like Mother Theresa.

My bad. I'm not baggin on Hitchens. Right or wrong, the dude has balls and speaks his mind with a bit of wit and thought. Mad respect. My tirade was aimed more towards the hipocrits who defend assholes of a slightly different flavor than that of our dear friend, Falwell.

You're not surprised, are you? I came into this thread expecting exactly what's here.

I have no ill will towards Falwell. The man knew where he stood, knew what he believed, and felt that his belief system was the best way for people to obtain a healthy, happy, rewarding life.

Contrary to the selected quotes posted here to portray the man as a hate-monger, any interviews I saw of him on TV displayed quite the opposite. He didn't wish harm onto the gay man. Instead, Falwell tried to convince the gay man to turn to Jesus and see what that lifestyle offered.

But pardon my interruption. You all can noe resume the hatefest.
