Sort of a strange question here. I've got my new iPhone 4, and I have Auto-Lock set to "5 minutes". When it's sitting on my desk, it works great--after 5 minutes the screen goes blank and I have to slide the screen to unlock.

However, when I keep the phone in my front jeans pocket, it never seems to Auto-Lock. Is there any particular reason for that to happen? I'd prefer to have the Auto-Lock on at all times, and I'm not sure why it's disabling when in my pocket.

Probably it keeps registering a touch before the lock can trigger. I just push the button on top quickly to trigger a manual lock before putting it in my pocket.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

...or the sensor that detects when you're holding it up to your face thinks that's what is happening. I got in the habit of pushing the "sleep" button before putting mine in a pocket, and that solved that issue for me.

Auto-lock activates a set period after the last input. If your phone display is against your leg, the leg is providing lots of input, all the time.

If you're lucky, the proximity sensor triggers Siri, and when you talk, Siri will interpret your speech and start doing random things. This can be exciting.

The solution, as ghporter notes, is to just lock it by pressing the sleep button whenever you put it in your pocket. It's a completely automatic move for me.

Not that you need more confirmation, but I also habitually do the auto-lock.

Apple actually had an ingenious training method. The iPhone 1G cellular was so worthless, there was only one place in my apartment where it got reception.

If I didn't lock it before I walked away, I'd get text messages during the 5 minute window, and they wouldn't make the loud alert or show up as a notification.

Since it was always on a table and not in my pocket, both those things were important.
