Interesting, but I doubt it will work that well on pictures that have not been prepped extensively.
Doesn't seem that useful either.
Reminds me of how Pixar made two versions of Bug's Life to compensate for the 4:3 fullscreen version.
The actually rendered two versions of many scenes, so they would fit better.

Why didn't they do what most filmmakers do and use 4:3, 1.85:1, 16:10 and 2:35.1 overlay guides on their virtual camera and crop/letterbox the 4:3 output?
