What is the difference between a 2nd and 3rd generation ipod? is it the sizes or certain manufacturing date? Is there a way to tell?

1G iPods have the play/menu/etc buttons around a physically scrolling wheel.
2G iPods have the same buttons around a touch-sensitive wheel, and have a little plastic cover over the Firewire port.
3G iPods are the current models, with 4 touch sensitive buttons in a row under the screen. These are slimmer and lighter than previous models, and have a new Dock Connector port on the bottom instead of a standard Firewire port on the top.
